Guy started randomly talking to me then stopped?

So, there is a guy from one of my classes who I like, and I am not sure if he likes me at all or is just friendly. He was in one of my other classes last semester, and we both sat in back, but we never talked, and he never approached me. This semester, he transferred to my lab section last month, and he suddenly started talking to be out of the blue, asking about the lab, and he did suggest to work together once, but I brushed him off, because I didn’t know that I liked him, at the time. He would wave to me when I walked in and smiled (only once or twice). The last time we were in the lecture together, he got up from the back seat and came to sit next to me, and asked me one of two questions, but he has never introduced himself or asked me for my name. Sometimes, I think he does look at me when I’m not looking, and, when I walk into lab, he will look up and smile, even when I’m not looking. A few weeks ago, when I did realize that I liked him, I got super awkward and stopped looking at him and didn’t look up when I went into lab, but he just kind of stopped talking to me unless I said something to him. He came back into the lab with a friend when I was there, but didn’t say anything to me or acknowledge me, so now I am a bit confused, as I am not sure if he was just friendly or if he did like me, but, because I was sort of ignoring him, he is now ignoring me?

I'm just super confused, because I'm not sure what caused the abrupt change. I'm not sure what to do now, because if I continue talking to him, it might be awkward if there are no feelings on his end, and, if I don't, he might think I'm just ignoring him?
