If it's in casual sittings like a cafe or a restaurant, I don't maintain it more than a couple of seconds. I also try to make it look accidental, as if I were just checking something or fixing my seat maybe then get a quick glance of a handsome stranger.

But if it's in a place that's obviously made for socializing and people can come up to you to introduce themselves, I'd keep it for a while.
