This is a very hard subject because it depends on the type of women. Some women get a kick out of the romance put into it and some just want you to get to the point.
It is just my opinion but I believe some women would still love to be left notes. Unfortunately you have to read her and see the best option. But don't worry because if you guess incorrectly you will be labeled as a creep.

  No one is to old to be asking the advise of others especially in this case.. what is the OP was in a high-school sweetheart relationship and things just went bad 6 months ago and now he's trying to start up again.
