Why does my work colleague joke about me being his girlfriend?

If he's actually saying the words girlfriend, he sounds pretty serious. I mean, joking about stuff like that is pretty risky. Most guys procrastinate the word girlfriend and professing their love for a woman as long as possible. Unless of course, they really want to be with that woman. Then they won't mind rushing things. Pay attention to whether he calls you pet names in front of everyone. Even if it's said in a teasing way, he's still showing other people that he wants you to be his, and other guys can back off.

You don't until you ask him. Next time he flirts with you, laugh and casually flirt back to him saying "do you have a crush on me or do you just flirt with everyone". If you say it playfully it will break the ice and he may give a stronger indication of his intentions.
