So you have to be able to read the intent of the person speaking to you. Think about what a male coworker would say or do if you did something well. Is the woman doing the same thing? Most likely. “Good job” and a clap on the back/shoulder you’d get from a guy may be slightly different from a girl (perhaps less touching but a more excited facial expression or body language… “cheerleading” if you will). “I believe in you”/“you’ve got this” and similar statements draw from our more maternal or nurturing instinct (which is a stronger tendency in some women more than others and can be a very effective coaching style in the workplace). It shows a touch of appreciation and affection designed to motivate (but not to illicit anything romantic or sexual).


At work, trying to establish productive companionable relationships has a lot to do with the tacit understanding that all exchanges are platonic by default. Once one of you crosses that conceptual line you’re already asking for trouble.


In other words, individuals will hear what they want to hear and imagine there’s more there than what’s intended. Just stick to the HR rule book and have the self control/common sense to see anything work-related as platonic.

Always just assume they're not romantically interested. Unless they are hitting your DMs with obvious or mild thirst, or seeing if you want to meet up off site somewhere, just take the compliment at face value and be happy about it. I have had many friends who are women at work over time. Even the ones who are uncharacteristically warm towards me, I simply don't consider them being into me. The few I did end up dating would be active on my social media in some way, or hang out around my car or something after work. I'm not that interesting to hang out at my car as just a friend, but even then I won't assume anything until they're spelling it out clearly. Women seem to often have male friends they think they can trust, only to get hit with the weird "I have a question" messages at midnight later on, and I'm sure it gets old. Work's definitely a place you can meet people, but don't count on it.

Just assume nothing is flirting unless she is touching you, staring at your body or stripping naked for you. And even then, she can always change her mind later and the legal system, HR and your boss will all believe whatever she says so if I'm you I would ignore women unless you really, really want to take that risk. Keep it 100% professional at all times. I worked places where women showed up in a professional office environment wearing yoga pants while all the men have on shirts, pants and suits. Us guys knew they wanted the ego stroke of getting attention. 99% of them were married to. We just ignored them. Well the smart guys did.
