What is he tryna do?

It all started one day when my friends and I went to a newly opened, popular cafe in our area. I saw a boy who had just started working at the cafe and his smile caught my attention at first glance. But this boy looked familiar from my old school. Then I went home and started looking for this kid's Instagram account on my old school's website. When I found it, I immediately sent him a request. We didn't start talking, but later on, we often went to this cafe with my friends, and when the he saw me, he would give me looks, smile and occasionally make small conversations with me. But unfortunately, since I'm a bit shy, I didn't make much of a pass to him due to my nature. Later, I think he decided not to get that close to me, we only communicated by chatting on social media and liking each other's posts. I didn't go to the cafe very much anymore, but when I did, I couldn't take my eyes off him. I kept catching him looking at me, but it was like we were both locked in a glass and we were afraid to take a step. Since we live in a very small place and everyone knows each other, I am actually afraid of the reaction of all his friends and our circle if he rejects me. If we start hanging out, having people with whom I have a bad past in his circle of friends could damage our relationship. Also, I can't tell if he likes me or not. My friends say if he liked me he'd find a way to talk/text. What should i do? What is he tryna doo? :((
