Guy breathing heavy?

I was hanging out with a good guy friend of mine watching TV one night. We where sharing the loveseat and I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. He was breathing heavy but not loudly. I could tell by the way his belly would rise up. He was sitting close to me at some points then shift a bit away and play with his hand. He also draped his arm over the back of the couch. What was going through his mind? Or going on with him.

Sounds like he was nervous. Maybe he was planning on making a move on you, but then chickened out. That would explain the nervousness (assuming that's what it was) and him getting close and then moving away.

Dead on. The poor guy was terrified! Next time, he'd probably appreciate you making him feel a little welcome, perhaps? Maybe you could take his hand, or something.
