Can’t tell if this guy likes me or if I’m reading too much into it?

I need outside opinions because I can’t think rationally in these situations and my overthinking takes over.

There’s this guy in my class I’ve been talking to for a week. Last Saturday we were at a house party. I wanted him there, so my friend invited him. When he arrived, my friend made it obvious I liked him and later asked him about girls. He said there’s a girl he’s talked to for about 1.5 years, but also said there’s a girl at the party he thinks is “really pretty, cute, and nice” — and everyone knew it was me.

That girl he mentioned first is from his friend group. They’ve flirted but never dated, and she is talking to other guys at the moment. Anyway, that night he and I talked a lot and bonded outside, just the two of us despite the both of us knowing what had been said. The next days at school were slightly awkward but with tension. Then on Wednesday, he came to my place for a group project. After everyone left, he stayed to walk my dog, and we got really comfortable with each other. He’s been taking more initiative lately — asking me to join him for breaks, get food, etc.

He’s seeked out for me recently, and today we studied for a test. After the test, I asked what he was doing this weekend. He said no plans per now, so later I asked if he wanted to hang out tonight. He said he couldn’t because he was helping a friend with Halloween stuff, and didn’t suggest another time.

I know that’s not rejection, but it made me doubt if I’ve read things wrong. He seems caught between me and the other girl, and I don’t want to chase — just wondering if this sounds like interest or if I’m overanalyzing everything.

Yes do not chase. There are guys that love that. Just because one day they will let themselves be caught. Then after that they walk away

I get what you mean, and I know asking directly would give a clear answer. I just feel like we’re still in the early stage, we haven’t really hung out one-on-one outside school yet. I want things to unfold naturally and stay comfortable, rather than forcing it too soon.

I think communication is natural... humans do it all the time. But hey thats me.

I get what you’re saying, communication is important, and I agree. For me, it just feels too early to ask about “us” since we don’t really know what we are yet. I want to understand eventually, but right now I think it’s better to let things unfold naturally. I also don’t wanna scare him off because we haven’t really done anything that’s reasonable for me to ask.

I feel like I’ve kind of done that already. I’ve given him space and usually let him take initiative socially. I’m comfortable around him, confident, and just act like myself. I don’t chase or push things — I just match his energy and stay open to talking or hanging out when it feels natural. He usually reaches our first like texting about small things, not conversations yet.

Maybe he just wants friendship and leave it at school and then when school finishes that’s it have you ever thought about that? This could go on for years you’re putting yourself in a very difficult situation. That’s why you should find out sooner rather than later you’re gonna put yourself through a lot of headaches and heartbreak if it continues on like this are we talking about college?

I doubt it, or else it would’ve happened on Saturday. He’s a social, down to earth, genuine and lowkey inexperienced guy. I don’t think he is very confident when it comes to girls.
