How often do people compliment you?

Yesterday something kind of funny happened.

A guy came into the store with a skateboard.. tall, dirty blond hair in a bun, really striking brown eyes. When he got closer I asked him if he had ever done modeling, because honestly he looked like he could.

He looked surprised and said, “You’re asking if I’ve done modeling?” and just smiled. Then a couple older women nearby started chiming in too telling him how handsome he was.

What surprised me was how genuinely caught off guard he seemed. I would’ve assumed someone who looked like that would hear compliments all the time.

So now I’m curious… how often do people actually get complimented?

Is it something that happens a lot to you, or almost never?

Pretty often actually. But it took me a long time to notice it. I've always considered myself an average looking guy. A solid member of the middle of the bell curve when it comes to attractiveness.

I used think everyone got compliments as a common courtesy in social interaction. I'd just shrug it off and not read anything into it. Just a woman being nice.

But over time it dawned on me.

A woman said something to the effect "I've seen your watch collection". Not my watch, all my watches. Hmmm... so she'd been paying attention to me for a long time. I didn't recall ever seeing her before. Oops.
"Is that cashmere? I love cashmere" and she runs her hand from my shoulder to my wrist. She wasn't shy about copping a feel of my arm as she checked out my sweater.
And then there's the rare direct approach. "You're a really handsome guy".
And I've gotten comments on my voice like "you should be on radio or TV with your voice".
Or... "You always look so put together". Again the inference is that she had seen me more than once. And again, I didn't recognize her at all.
Then there's random stuff women say because I guess they're just looking for a way to start a conversation. They'll compliment my jacket, shoes, nose, hair, confidence, height, shirt, my background, a tie tack, my sense of style.
One said... You look like you could be an assassin."
They'll buy me a drink to keep me talking.
Or they'll ask what I'm drinking then ask if they can have a sip.
Or they'll ask me to take a sip of their drink.
I've even had them basically schedule a date without my consent. "Do you come here often?" "Yeah, usually Friday nights with that group over there." When she gets up to leave with her BFF, "so we'll see you next Friday". And she showed up.
Another one hops into the seat next to me... "You always sit in that exact seat." Me, jokingly... "Yeah I own this seat. It's reserved for me." She'd obviously seen me before and didn't choose that seat at random. Again, I don't recall ever seeing her before.

That type of thing tends to happen 2-3 times per night when I'm out on one of my Friday nights with the idiots I hang with. And mind you, I do not make it easy for women. I'm a pretty unrepentant introvert. I almost never start a conversation with anyone I don't know. I hate small talk about nothing with strangers. And per the assassin comment I mentioned, my resting bitch face and size scares a lot of people.

From beautiful girls’ that i will date because she made the first move. From my experiences with girls’ that asked me out , were better relationships than me asking her out , mainly because I feel girls’ know what they want and if she wants me to, it’s better lol

It's a funny question that's landed on my path just as I was mentioning an odd phenomenon. I was really put down my this one fellow who acted one way to my face and another behind my back, generating different rumors till I had to confront him. (Long story... literally had to haul him outside and have words.) Anyway, ever since that day AT LEAST ONCE DAILY God sent me someone to say something kind or complimentary to me. Complete strangers. It was so strange, but I've really felt that God Heard and Felt my heartbreak/anguish and sent all that positive sound so I would hear and feel His presence with me during this difficult time.

Even today, despite a massive issue I'm struggling with, I was able to receive smiles, compliments and connections with many people. It's... I don't know... unusual for me. I'm not used to it at all. I tend to live a much quieter more routine sort of life.

Hmm on a weekly basis on my personality, the way I dress, or how I look. Sometimes, it’s from co-workers or patients. Other times, it’s from strangers.

It might’ve been surprised because he’s a guy who may not get it often, humble, doesn’t see himself in that light, or a shy person. I’m also a shy & humble person with compliments since I tend not to like too much attention and will easily blush once I’m overwhelmed with compliments as well.

The truth is that a lot of people who are attractive don’t get tons of compliments many times people assume they already know as well as can feel nervous and intimidated. In fact….. It’s weird because some attractive people don’t think they’re attractive.

Oddly, they tend to get a lot of negativity as well for a man they get negative attention from other men who are envious of them. As for females women who don’t feel like they have a chance with him and again become envious or in other cases if he’s making a move fear rejection now or later. So they’re rejecting him before he can reject or hurt her. Same for attractive women just reverse it.

As for me. Occasionally. It happens. But just remember a lot of times kind words go a long ways chances are he probably thinks about what you said.

I don't go out often enough to get it often, but I do once in a blue moon these days. Most are with family about my physique when I'm with them at a beach or something.

But I do occasionally get them from friends about my intelligence.

The most common compliment I get from strangers is that I have beautiful eyes.

More often than I am I comfortable with. I wouldn't say it happens a lot. But everytime I am caught off guard. Sometime at the fact I am being complimented but many times because of the compliment itself. It's alway something like have you ever done modeling or something I have personaly heard your eyes are so blue I could swim in them. Compared to a compliment I have given, I love those ear rings on you, it is refreshing to see something other than big hoops. I don't know maybe i'm overthinking it all and it is simply being raised as a man to be the one to compliment without any talk of being complimented.

I'm not surprised by his surprise lol, to me physique based compliments in public are an oddity, if it's a guy telling to a girl then it somewhat looks corny or fishy so I understand why a guy would abstain, and when it's a girl telling to a guy, well, I haven't seen that anywhere, in person

So, no, my main and sole source for this specific sort of compliments is... A girlfriend. Which is enough to satisfy my vain needs hehe

I do get complimented regularly, especially at work where I interact with many customers or at the gym. It's mostly small compliments about looks. But I also get more meaningful compliments from time to time from people that know me better which make me happy.

A few times a year. It's funny you ask this question, because just two nights ago a woman complimented my eyes, which is what I usually get complimented about. I have amber eyes and if light hits them a certain way, they look orange or yellowish.

Whenever I feel it's warranted. Like I was at work and I work at a somewhat physical job. And there's 3 of us. A guy right next to me and a woman further down. One day we working. And getting worked over pretty good. At the end of it our woman co-worker walked past us and I got a whiff of her scent. And I turned to her and said how do you do that? And she said, "do what"? and I said we're all working hard and sweating and smell like pigs and here you are with a sweet coconut smell. How do you do that? What kind of perfume is that? And she said it's not perfume, it's just lotion. And I said, "well, it works".

I don't compliment people a lot and I think she didn't know how to respond. But I only noticed because of her proximity to us at that moment. And she's a hard worker. So it just surprised me how she was able to bust her ass working and still smell good doing it.

Outside of my family and my job, the answer is never. Even within my family and my job, I kind of bend the rules of what constitutes a compliment to make it seem like there are any. Also, outside of obviously off-hand and usually false statements like "You sure grew taller" (I am literally a dwarf according to the modern standards), no compliments ever praised my looks.

I get complimented fairly often. People appreciate how present I am during conversations and I guess I make them feel seen. I also get a lot of compliments on my eyebrows and eyes.

As much as a lot of women like to believe it’s the opposite, men really don’t get compliments. We’ve just learned to grow w it. We don’t need all that validation the way a lot of women do. Could you imagine if men waited around for validation before they actually did things like wait to be told how good his mechanic skills are, how he’s the best brick layer, etc, etc. That’s why it always make me laugh when women say they’re they stronger of the sexes mentally.
