How do I proceed?

The guy I like is starting to talk to me more now. Yet the people he associates with have told me he MIGHT have a girlfriend.

They all said might and that they didn't know for sure, but if he does in fact have a girlfriend my plan is to definitely back off of him because I ain't messing with taken men. YET I still don't know if he does. How do I proceed with interactions with him from now on so I don't cross a line?

The only line you would be crossing is NO to ask him directly whether he has a girlfriend or not. Of course, he might not give you an honest opinion, but it is up to you to see through him when you ask your question and analyze his answer.

By doing that, you will obviously also let him know that you are interested in him.

Do not rely on the what other people think or may tell you because often it is not the truth.

Right, that's a good idea. I was gonna attempt to ask him in a smoother way to make it not seem like I'm interested but curious cause of a unrelated reason, but it's better to know so I don't cross any boundaries.
