I am going to answer this as best I can. Coming with a few more years of experience in seeing this consistantly with men (exspecially the slightly shy ones). I have had this same question many a time. At first I used to be irratated by it, but then I began to understand it. Speaking about a particular guy (this may not apply to everyone), the guy I have seen do this is shy. One day he would be very friendly and flirty and the next it was like I didn't exist. In my experience, it was because he didn't want to seem too eager to see me (he was in a relationship and so was I). It was also about timing. If it had been a week or so he would be consistanly friendly, but if it was only a couple of days since the last time we flirted, it would become very awkward for him (and me too I might add), mostly because the last time we spoke was so great that seeing each other again soon made us extra nervous. Also it was about who was around. Obviously since he was in a relationship he didn't want his guy friends to see him flirting, so if they were around he would be downright cold to me. Don't take it personal, consider your surrounding, his relationship status and how long ago you have talked to him, its probably a sign he likes you.

Definitely yes!. Guys play games as much as girls do, please keep in mind that this varies from individual to individual.

Example.

College class, usually everyone tries to act professionally. If you were to scope the room, no one is really watching each other except the teacher, but secretly, people do look at each other from time to time, they stare at their crushes and day dream. Some days more than other days

behaviorally speaking some days guys just feel good and confident, then they might be a bit intrepid and make a move that doesn't fit the routine, but the next day the guy won't feel that good and he goes back to the routine.

I want to add that my little paragraph on behavior does not apply to everyone in the world so don't be offended and if you share a different view please enlighten me. I hope this helped.

See I don't know what games he's playing, I don't even know if he's your friend so I can't comment on that, tell me what his games are and then I can determine whether, he's shy, angry, lonely, outgoing, anything... I need more info on this guy.

Idk about other guys but for me, that would be just messing with her and not liking her. Just friendly flirting, maybe that sounds mean, but it's unintentional and unfortunately sends the wrong messages, it goes both ways you know. He could be *trying* to play hard to get, don't get why a guy would do that though, it might work sometimes but usually it's the guy who is doing the chasing, not the girl running after the guy. So him hiding wouldn't make a lot of sense. If a guy likes a girl, he's going to want to be around her, period. =)

Once I figure out a girl is an attention whore, I will stop all flirting (and of course lose romantic interest in her as well).

I'll still be polite and pleasant which may be received as flirting.

Another possible motivation may be the guy trying to make you jealous. Or, he could be interested in another girl.

How do you define attention whore? How does she act like an attention whore?

Obvious signs include: incessantly playing with her hair, constantly scanning a room, very physically gimmicky, cannot say no to anyone, etc. etc.

I view an attention whore as the female counterpart to the male "nice guy" that has lots and lots of girl "friends", but no girlfriend. In terms of personality, attention whores lack personal identity (they assume the personalities/standards of others) and basically try to extract attention from a whole bunch of different people at the same time.

That's interesting. So, by your definition because I'm nice to the majority of people (and I happen to speak with more guys than girls) I could be viewed as an attention whore. When if someone got to know me they'd be further from the truth.

That's strange because the girl you described there would be more of a nervous, shy girl than an attention whore. Most people think attention whores are loud, overly flirtatious, and confident bordering on just plain ol' cocky.
