Why would a guy talk to me when we're alone but ignore me in public?

I had a big crush on this guy at my job and I thought the feeling was mutual. When I told him I liked him and would like to hang out with him sometime, he turned me down and told me he only likes me as a friend. I guess I made this awkward for him because he started ignoring me, I was hurt but I got over it and started ignoring him too.

That was a few months ago, I got over my crush I had for him and now this guy wants to talk to me all the time, we talk about everything (school, work, jokes random stuff you name it). But he only talks to me when no one is around, when we are in the public eye he ignores me. He stares at me for long periods of time and he ALWAYS has to be very close to me.

My friends keeps telling me that the guy likes me and that I intimidate him but I don't feel like he likes me at all. My co-workers tells me when I don't come into work he looks for me and she over heard him saying "I can only hope to see you soon...".

If this boy in fact likes me, why won't he tell me? Why does he have to ignore me in public?

Public perception. Perhaps he ignores you to avoid giving your co-workers the idea that there is something going on between you two, which commonly happens when a guy is shy, inexperienced, or private. Ignoring you is his way of communicating his discomfort with going public about everyone knowing his business.

Perhaps he does not know how to approach the situation. His dilemma, "do I tell her and take the scrutiny or do I not tell he and risk losing the chance to date her".

Make thing easy on him, avoid the public show and be attentive when you are alone with him. He'll come to realize that you both share the need for privacy and then will perhaps get the confidence to ask you out.

It seems that he just doesn't want to tell to the public that you're together.

He must've turned you down, even if he likes you, because he's still not ready for something serious.

The best time to talk to a woman, is when she's alone...scary? probably but that's what we're told is the best time
