I feel like the answer here is obvious but he doesn’t want anyone to confuse you for his girlfriend or someone he’s seriously seeing. Like he doesn’t want anybody to get even the slightest suspicion to where he probably doesn’t even want to say hello in public.

Or maybe he's worried about seeming too eager, too clingy, or too forward, and this is his way of trying to not cross any boundaries.
