Why do some people pretend that being drunk is cool?

A lot of my classmates brag how they get drunk and laugh about it. I really don't get it.

I have never been drunk but I read in a couple of magazines that you feel really bad the next morning. So why are they pretending like it's something to be proud of?

People use alcohol as a means to loosen up a little and it helps them be more social. Overall, being drunk is overrated, it tastes awful and I don't need alcohol to have a good time.

The high it gives you is not really a good one. You can feel shitty afterwards. The good news is that it drinking in moderation isn't that bad but you will need to know your limits.

Many people your age are just trying to have fun. Alcohol is seen as a "grown up" thing to do and so many will want to indulge themselves with it.

Don't drink if you don't want to. If your friends give you stick for not drinking then find new friends or just ignore them.

In countries where children can easily buy alcohol it's not considered cool. I think it's only considered cool if it's seen as an act of rebellion, or is seen as only being for adults.

Because they are dumb!! How can be cool seeing a person passing out on the streets, vomiting and intoxicated due to alcohol drinking? If a person believes that is cool I guess that person needs his/her head straightened out or needs a lesson to teach the difference between cool and stupid and dumb.

I hate the taste of alcohol. Drunk people look and act like fools lol I'd never get in such a drunken state like that , cos I like to be aware of my surroundings and have total control over myself. I'd feel too vulnerable if I was drunk

different people act different but personally I tend to be really bubbly and smiling all the time and also extremely honest
I did some crazy mistakes about this brutal honestly when I was drunk but I learnt from it
they don't matter anymore now

that applies for when you drink for fun
when you drink for sadness is different... it devastates you worse

i only got drunk 3 or 4 times
twice for fun, others...
the last time i think? I was in the car luckily with my friends after the Christmas prom and i was all good only with redbulls
then i mixed wine and got completely fucked up
it was late at night too so everybody was asleep and my best friend carried me to the bed
then the mistakes start with texting my crush that i knew i had 0 chances with
also redbulls made me stay up all night so it was a deep ass all night convo
told him everything i felt for him and shit
he's gone now tho and it doesn't matter anymore cause i'm over it but i really regret it and it hurts as fuck

so i hope telling you my stories will make you learn something from me haha <3
just be careful. this world is harsh and fucked up.

Because they see it as being rebels, especially at your age. Anything that goes against the law is "cool".
I've never been drunk, but I've been close... never again. I puked several times (I hadn't eaten anything all day) and it ruined my night. The most I go is tipsy, which is fun because it lets you loose but it doesn't make you feel sick or anything.
I don't like it when people get drunk. It's embarrassing, and sad to see them wasted.

my classmates are also like that. you see; we are the type of people who want to live a simple happy life.
they might feel that it-s a great deal to brag and boast about getting drunk. but understand the reality: if they do, let them do. they are simply willing to get attention from others.
we don't need that. we can live without searching and craving for attention.
so try to counsel yourself that everyone has the liberty to do whatever they feel like. just don't bother about that.

Cuz when you're 16 it's illegal so it's exclusive (i. e. cool/badass). They like the ego trip of feeling superior over those who don't/won't/can't do it. Since they don't get enough love or recognition from their parents, they want to feel special by acting out. I did the same thing when I was 16. Also you don't get hungover as much at that age.

Because they think they're one of the cool kids. Its a well-known fact amongst teens and young adults that your coolness is proportional to how drunk you get and how much vomit you spew. Bonus points if you wind up with some ridiculous stories you and your friends can laugh over. I blame the media for glamorizing the drinking/partying culture. Once you vomit your own weight, you start realizing that it just ain't worth it, and perhaps never was worth it to begin with.

It shows that you are not avid drinker which is good. If you bring drinking in your routine you'll be more comfortable with it. Your emotions would be high tent and you would loose your self if you drink more. If you have seen how I met your mother you can see Barney's stages of drinking. Every person has a different drinking experience with different results

Yea.. but why would anyone fake drunkenness to maintain their presence in bad company (AKA the people who are actually drunk) - instead of getting actually drunk themselves if that's the theme of the occasion (which is bad to begin with), other than to exploit other people.
And other than that, why would drunk people be bothered by non-drunk people - instead of just ignoring the people they don't really care about. Do people really, like, "check" who's drinking how much and who isn't? (That's one of the most dubious things I've ever read in these contexts. Seems I've never gone *that* low.)

Anyway, the original asker's question wasn't really about situations like these, but rather about people who actually get drunk again and again and then fail to see (or prefer to ignore) that they make fools of themselves by pretending that it's "cool" what they did.
I don't think they pretend though - they just follow the simple-minded herd.
