Fine dining: Worth it or waste of money?

I am starting to think expensive restaurants are not worth it but I never been to a really expensive restaurant.

It's worth it if you aren't worried about the price tag going in. Then again there are a ton of fine dining options in New Orleans. Some have been open since before the civil war, so they've had plenty of time to hone the ambience and menu. When I was working at the strip clubs we'd go to the Sunday brunches at Commander's Palace when we were waking up, or finishing partying depending.

Something fun about going from a rave or ONS to coat and tie, also the food, mimosas and bloody marys are phenomenal there. So many options to choose from. I wouldn't claim to have eaten at 1/10th of the fine dining places here. There's just too many, even if I was a fiend about it with someone else footing the bill, I'd probably have a stroke if it was every night before hitting up every place.

I make a bacon pasta that makes you feel orgasmic while eating. One of my favorite pizza places makes a pizza that does similar. A really fuckin good steak will make pleasure center's go off in your brain and make you feel it all over.

Really fuckin good food is worth a higher price. That said, it has to be that good and not all fine dining places are that good. So there's a caveat.

It can be worth it. But it also can not be worth it. For me I will not order food I can make myself, because I do it till it's good and professional quality plus specific to me. So I can't justify it to myself to pay for it.

I will pay experts to make dishes I can't or don't do tho. Still need to learn how this Mexican restaurant does their shrimp because it's amazing

I was invited to a very expensive restaurant. I felt guilty about my brother paying, so I only ordered the cheap $25.00 hamburger. It was supposed to come with avocado on it, but they didn't put any on. The lettuce was wilted, and it looked like they pulled it out of the garbage. It was the worst hamburger of my life. I was going to order a shot of whiskey, but the prices started at $35 and the highest was about $150. So just because their prices are high, it doesn't mean you're doing any fine dining.

I've never been fine dining.. But I've definitely enjoyed cheaper and expensive restaurants. No regrets.

I've been to some amazing restaurants that weren't all that expensive and had lots of really good dining experiences. Wonderful food and nice ambiance is great on certain occasions. But there is a limit to how much I am willing to spend. So I have to say that I've never been to a super expensive restaurant. It wouldn't be worth it to me just like it wouldn't be worth it to pay hundreds of $ for a bottle of wine.

Some of the most expensive restaurants cost $500-$2500 per meal, not counting drinks, tax and tips. That's not worth it to me.

I can only say from my personal experience: waste of money.

For my senior prom, my date and I went to this really upscale seafood restaurant on the waterfront close to where the prom was being held. While the view of the bay and general atmosphere was nice, the prices were outrageous and you didn't get a lot. I ordered the scallops with garlic butter sauce and I only got like six scallops for like $28 (this was 2008 money mind you). That was my first impression of "fine dining" and I quickly realized it wasn't for me.

Now maybe there are some "fine dining" restaurants that do offer more reasonable portions to make up for such high prices (maybe not) but I would be very reluctant or even hesitant to do it again if presented with the opportunity again.

My son is a chef. he enjoys the fine dining style of cooking , to him and many others it is an art form ans you go for the experience , not just the food. he just started at a 2
star Michelin restaurant where he hood to
improve his skills.


but it is for the elite. not the every person. it is an elitist event. i’ll never be able to experience it, not at 500 buck a head.


personally, i’d rather cook great tasking food in great combinations ans be enjoyed by many more. i’m not a foofoo fan.

Not all fine dining is equal.

Some are just "fine dining" because of the location.

Real fine dining is usually a place where the menu has no prices. Mainly as if you're asking prices you're not there for the fine dining.

You will get less food for more money.
If you're unlucky, you also will have to suffer the babble of a cook who praises the food in a (unsolicited) speech while the little amount of food he babbles about is getting cold ( happened to me; but I was invited; so: no financial loss here :D ).
You also will have to suffer the presence of numerous newly-rich who would eat an old shoe if the waiter declares it to be ''life-styl-ish'.

Most fancy restaurants are going to take you for a ride. High priced food in small portions. They basically charging you for atmosphere and status.

If you spend a shite load on wine then you are being suckered.

I certainly used to enjoy fine dining. Ever since Covid, my ability to taste and appreciate subtle flavors is basically shot, so the fine dining experience is rather wasted on me.
