I just learned that tipping is not mandatory by law in the US. It's not illegal to leave nothing. So that's great! You can save money on your bill just like that.

My friend said if you don’t tip a place you plan on returning to, they can punish you by making your food really bad. I once unintentionally gave a dirty look to my waiter and he made my sushi so spicy I could not eat it properly. I wasn’t trying to be rude, but forgot to monitor my face while talking to him.

No, the waitstaff has to work hard and they do not make much without tips. Maybe the ststem needs to be changed so that they get paid a living wage but until that happens they should get a decent tip if the service was good.
