I don't know when "THE day" was but, I can tell you about back in the `60's and `70's! Like nearly everything, they're getting smaller! Used to be, back when we had nothing but short people, you could play a game of baseball inside your car with thousands of people in there watching you!! Today, now that most people are tall, people like me need the jaws of life just to get INTO a car!! Houses used to have at least 9 or 10 foot high ceilings! Now, you're lucky if you can find a new house with at least a 7 foot ceiling!!
As for candy, a 5 cent candy bar was at least 6" long and at least an inch wide and more than half an inch thick!! Now, those same candy bars are at least a dollar (I think) and they're about 2" shorter! When Pringles first came out, they were 39 cents per can (then they came out with twin packs for 69 cents, then triple packs for 99 cents, they might've even gone to quadruple packs for about $1.25.) and the cans stood about 11" tall. Now, they might be 9" tall and cost, what, $3.00 for one can? (I haven't bought any in years so, I just don't know.)
It is brand to brand but in general many, if not most, of the big brands are reducing the quantity. So there is a very real basis for this.
The simple reason is magnitude. For a company producing 100 bars a cent extra per bar is perceived as neglible, there are easier ways to earn that dollar. As the company grows and produces a 200 million instead (kitkat) that becomes an easy way to get an extra 2 million. With volume small savings and optimizations become more important. This paired with the economy being in a state of lowering costs to earn more rather than doing better to earn more is likely key reasons.
I bought kitkat on Saturday and thought the same thing and that I must be making this up haha... but seems like it's a thing? Anyways it's kinda unfair, a higher price for less... what a deal
Maybe some are smaller but I think majority are the same. Probably just seemed like it was bigger because you were a kid...

I like mine hard
I bet you do! Hahaha.
Oh yeah! We can blame Toblerone for starting this trend years ago, same size package, less chocolate, less weight.
Toblerone is one of those chocolates people only buy at Christmas for some strange reason. Most people can't spot the bear on the logo either.
Yep, much smaller.
A mars bar used to be 65g, you could cut it half and share it in a pinch and the king size one was 100g i think, that was too much but it is the king and if you cut one of those in half you get the regular size that you get now (for 2 or 3 times the money).
These days however you can get pretty good quality chocolate from supermarkets for about 30p per 100g which is crazy cheap. Lidl do allsorts of favours too like hazelnuts etc.
It’s referred to, at least in circles in which I travel, as shrinkflation; I. e. they shrink the amount of product in order to keep costs down as much as possible. Where you used to get a familiar amount for a standard price, now you are paying slightly more for slightly less, but are willing to accept it because that is just how it works now. If they kept amounts the same sticker shock would likely impact sales numbers, and goodness knows we can’t have that.
Yeah definitely, everything has gotten smaller and costs more, all because of inflation and lack of enough resources to keep up with the growing world population. I heard we might run out of chocolate someday because they can’t keep up with the crops. That sucks because I love chocolate
Chocolate products are getting smaller and at the same time they are costing more. The companies are trying to keep up with inflation, but I think they are actually coming out ahead a bit.
Never given it much thought. I'm not a big chocolate eater. Pop was my "drug" of choice and I can definitely tell you that's gotten Bigger over the years. 16 Oz bottles were pretty standard. Now 20oz is standard. 1 liters didn't exist even. Everything is geared to us drinking more and more sugar. Sorry I'm going to stop before I start ranting.
Suffice it to say, I don't need chocolate. Lol
A big Hershey bar used to be a nickel. People gave out the full size candy bars for Halloween. Now everyone just gives out the little bitty ones. Two bites and it;s gone.
? A hundred grams bar is a hundred grams bar is a hundred grams bar. Now had you asked if the price for said bar is increasing… 🤔
I am pretty sure that’s illegal within the EU. What some chocolate manufacturers did, was to create new bar sizes. For example, the Ritter Sport 250 g bar costs three times the price of a 100 g bar.
Good point, I am sure shenanigans like this are going on. I was more focusing on the hypothesis that somebody could manufacture a 95 grams bar and sell it in the usual 100 grams packaging.
Yes.
The toothpaste tube is filled with more and more air too.
Yes. Everything shrank. Also, how bad is it that they had to put instructions on a candy bar on how to open it?
Yes, chocolate is getting smaller, the same as bags of potato chips
Everything is that way. They call it shrinkflation. Instead of raising the price they just reduce the amount that they give you.
Definitely.. everything is. But the price is the same or higher
Absolutely it is smaller. Everything is smaller now.
Everything now is smaller people cut back on their products
Lol. I see what you did there. Making the British chocolate bigger. Slick move.
Doesn't bother me because I'm not a fan of chocolate that much
I miss when you used to ask real questions
Yes. Inflation.
It is definitely getting smaller.
some things are
yes it is
Much smaller
