Yes, and European chocolate is PHENOMENAL. actually I prefer chocolate everywhere apart from Canada and America and I am a born and raised Canadian. Chocolate is usually mixed with various oils, sweeteners and preservatives here.. in America I see a lot of corn syrup used which is really bad for your health! It causes a lot of addiction and is seriously not good for you. By the time you've read the ingredients... chocolate is way down on the list. On the other hand, Europeans tend to be prissy about their chocolate and you can taste that perfectionism in the chocolate. Now, I'm not saying you can't can't good chocolate here, you just have to look hard for it and it's usually quite expensive. Europeans have a higher standard of food control and quality in Europe.. so things taste different.

American chocolate (Hershey in particular) has a vomit taste and smell because of the process they out the milk through producing butyric acid (the very acid which gives vomit it's smell and taste in our stomachs). Plus the USA only has a 10% minimum cocoa requirement for milk chocolate. Whereas in the UK milk chocolate has to have at least 25%.

Some of the worst popular chocolates from Europe taste a lot better than the best popular American one.
Chocolate is as abundsnt in Europe as it is in America. But the quality control in most European countries is way more strict.
Vegetable fat/oil can not be over 5%. In Europe, the fat used is usually cocoa butter, which will contribute to the flavor. The US usually replaces it with the cheapest alternstive.
The EU will not let you advertise a product as chocolate if it's not at least 25% cocoa. The US only requires 10%. The US suplements the lack of cocoa with sugar. And in most cases, you get American chocolate full of corn suryp instead of sugar, milk and cocoa butter.
Milka is a popular chocolate brand in Europe. You will see their chocolate in every market in Europe. Milka is a mid-end chocolate producer. Their chocolate is mediocre, usually sweeter, milkier, but yet affordable, and satisfying to eat. I have yet to try American chocolate product that beats a mediocre european brand like Milka.

European chocolate is superior, particularly in a straight up comparison of a "Hershey Bar" (a bar of milk chocolate) with (say) Ghirardelli- which has far more cacao and far less sugar. With that said, most Americans (in my experience) tend to eat candy bars rather than chocolate bars. Snickers, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way (I like them), Mounds, Almond Joy, M&Ms (candy coated chocolate), Baby Ruth, Pay Day, Butter Finger... the list is endless, and many are nearly unknown outside of the USA. Of course America doesn't need to export candy bars... not with 350 million sugar addicts waiting for their next fix!

Yes, because, here in America, we are idiots who have a love affair with a Frankenstein ingredient called High Fructose Corn Syrup. It's cheaper (by law) than sugar, so companies use it and make their stuff taste like shit.

That's why, in the US, Coca-Cola isn't really "The Real Thing" anymore and smart Americans buy "Mexicokes" which use actual sugar like what Coke used to use before HFCS came along in the late 1970s.

I have never had European chocolate, but US chocolate is a bit waxy. I don't actually like chocolate at all, never have my entire life... but I went to Canada and my wife convinced me to try some of theirs. Guess what? I suddenly like chocolate, so long as it is Canadian chocolate.

I have never liked Chocolate cake either, but loved the Canadian Chocolate cake.

Little research shows they started adding wax or something due to WWII to help them not melt in pockets and stuff, I don't know if they still do that but anything at all I can find in the local grocery store is crap.

Try an American Cadbury chocolate bar, (made by Hershey), then try the real Cadbury chocolate from England and you will notice a huge difference.

Nope. Most cocoa beans come from the same 5 countries. It’s traded as a commodity so everyone is buying the same base ingredients. Both countries know the same techniques. Different companies try different recipes based on their pricing goals, but there is a lot of similarity.

Neither European nor American chocolate can be considered better, it's really just a matter of taste preference. ... For example, if you were to compare a Hershey bar made in America versus a Cadbury Dairy Milk bar made in Europe, you would find a significant taste difference.

but i have friends from both here and there that argue over which one tastes better, all the time.

all i know is european chocolates have a higher cocoa content then American chocolates which have more sweeteners

Yes, there are differences, but which is better is a matter of taste. There are devotees of both who will insist that their favorites are the best, but there are no standards which make one "better" than the other.

Yes it does. The sugar levels are different along with the milk thats used which causes American chocolate to take on a lesser quality than that of it's European counterpart.

Hell yeah!! Some taste better in my opinion. Not so much sugar. Though some like cadbury has more milk than chocolate and can be off putting if you are not use to it. I like Belguim and swiss chocolate best.
