If a pizza is round, why is a pizza box square?

Pizza is round because of how it was traditionally made, by spinning dough which spreads it out radially via centrifugal force. With the slices, it’s quick and easy to just do 3-4 cuts and get 6-8 slices (typically). That’s not to mention the crust as well, which provides a good area to hold so you don’t get super messy fingers

The boxes come flat and need to be assembled quickly. It’s easier to do that from a flat square piece of cardboard that has pre made cuts and folds ready to form it into a box - the machines that make the boxes process thousands of them a day, so the process needs to be more simple and fast. Also, the way the boxes are when made up, they’re resistant to being crushed at the edges.

I mean you could have a square pizza in a round box with curved slices if you really wanted to, but it’s going to take a lot longer and wouldn’t be as appealing since it’s not tradition. That’s why round pizzas are most popular.

Production cost, round pizza box is much more difficult to make so its easier and cheaper to use a square box
