How thick should a lasagne be?

To celebrate Wales's crushing defeat of Italy in the six nations cup I've just made a lasagne. Now I know I don't do them authentically but I do do them better. I make them 3 inches thick because that's the depth of my square dish and I put 4 thick layers (2 meat, 2 veggie) and generously top with cheddar cheese sauce.

Of course you never eat it on the first bake. Much better reheated the next day. But how thick do you like yours?

To be honest, although I love lasagnes, I've never made one myself. Concerning the tickness, a minimum is required to be practical, I daresay about 2 inches, which is about 5 cm. At least that's what one of these days I'm going to aim at when trying to prepare one.

Sounds like you and I must have the same dish!

My method is very similar to that of @freyared although I tend to use vintage cheddar along with the bolognese for the top layer.

My husband though still puts a generous amount of grated parmesan with his serving!

I make 3 layers, 2 layers with bolognese, bechamel and mozzarella, top layer only bolognese with Swiss emmentaler. It's around 6-7 cm. I put grated veggies in bolognese sauce that's makes lasagne less dense.

They make specific lasagna dishes that are deep enough tovsllow enough layers I msje more of an Italian traditional lasagna, so no veggies other then onions and peppers, diced tomatoes in the rich thick tomato meat ( the meat is a mix of hot and sweet Italian sausage meat squeezed out of the casings and browned) sauce. I layer it sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, Parmigiano Reggiano, pasta and repeat for 4 to 6 layers and top with a generous amount of mozzarella and Parmigiano Reggiano.

When you talk about lasagna, you mean pasta al forno (baked pasta). Lasagna is a shape of pasta, which is usually used for pasta al forno. But baked you can make pasta al forno with many pasta shapes.

Normally when I make it it's three layers, the height will be about 5cm. It depends on the thickness of the pan I use. My father makes it in many layers with a little ragu for each layer but always about 5/6 cm thick.

Thick with a lot of meat in it you also want to make it tender not dry always put your lasagna back in the refrigerator. We had a bad experience in Los Angeles. My aunt Made lasagna put it out and it was covered but my sister found a maggot in it. It was disgusting.

3 to 5 inches thick. The proper lasagna dishes have sides that will allow for a 5" thick lasagna.
