Any cooks here? Mom used to cook ham in some kind of clear, slightly oily liquid, any idea what that is?

I just figured someone that knows how to cook a ham would know what that stuff is. I just can't think of the name of it to save my life!!

Is it a wet cured ham or a southern or s dry cured country ham? Wet cured bone in are the most popular as the country ham's are extremely salty. Most wet cured bone in hams have been cooked and smoked already, so you just need to heat them through and add a glaze of some sort. Which you baste the ham with every 20 minutes or so. Most glazes conduct of butter and marmalade or maple syrup or pineapple juice and or honey, brown sugar.

I kinda figured you meant, "consists". Studid phone!! That's one of the reasons I ONLY use mine for phone calls so, I rarely ever have it turned on more than a few minutes a week.

In most cases people simply add water, brine, broth or wine.


Being mixed with pork fat could make any of those feel oily.

I just remember it being almost as clear as water but having a few blobs of oil floating around on top. I remember the taste but I just can't figure what it was.
It's like how, shortly before she died, we discovered there was something that went REALLY well with Islay's bar-b-que sauce and we loved it so, the next time I went to the store I bought a huge bottle of the sauce and then neither one of us could remember what the meat was that we put it on and loved so much!! To this day, 7 or 8 years later, I'm still clueless!!

Maybe a marinade of some sort? Google ham marinades or natural preservatives
