My mom said its disgusting of me to feed the pigs the left over food of people because some people have diseases that can pass on pigs

Pigs were feed over thousands of years with food remains from the table and humanity didn't extinct. However now it's forbidden unless you're animal feed manufacturer who reheats pulverized food remains from gastronomy and supermarket dumpsters inclusive all that packaging plastic over 130C, mixes it with soybean meal and sells it to farmers.

Yes, in the old days we gad a garbage pail that was buried below ground. A guy would come once a week and collect it. It was fed to the pigs at a local farm but it was cooked first

And pigs have diseases that pass to humans too... Pigs will eat most anything you give them so it helps the environment to feed them leftovers that would end up in a landfill somewhere.
