Why do mexican restaurants serve or give free chips and salsa?

Chips and salsa are cheap, you can fill up on them while waiting for your meal, halfway through you are stuffed, and no one complains about small portions. And salty chips make you thirsty for Margaritas, served with sale on the rim to make you thirsty for more Margaritas.

What you think is free isn’t free after all & believe it or not food & drink prices are up for a reason.

It’s possible they can give you smaller portions if they give you free nachos and the portions might cost more to make than the nachos.
