Is maple syrup expensive in America?
For a lot here it's an occasional treat but you lot soak entire breakfasts in it.
Genuine (pure) maple syrup is pretty expensive, depending on what part of the U. S. you live in. It's less expensive in the northeast.
My wife is picky, and I'm glad. She buys it from some local organic market, but I have no idea how much it costs. We don't use that much of it, so it lasts a long time and is worth it.
What she does sometimes for pancakes, waffles or French toast is, heat maple syrup, butter and some molasses in a pan. It's delicious.
Other times, I just pour straight maple syrup.
I just looked on-line and it costs about as much as you quoted. But the price can vary a lot. I found prices ranging from $6.50 $13 or more for the equivalent of around 330 ml.
Prices vary wildly from brand to brand and from store to store. As of this post, the intergoogles says £8 = $16.75 Canadian and you can typically get about 750ml for that price. But then again, 85% of the world's maple syrup comes from Canada, so it's bound to be cheaper here. There's even a maple syrup "emergency" reserve supply stored in a massive warehouse in an undisclosed location. Seriously. lol
With that said, despite being Canadian, I don't like maple syrup. 😨 Vile tree juice. lol
As for your update...
No, not all maple syrup comes from Canada. Most of the rest of the 15% is made in the American northeastern states. There could be other countries that make a very small amount as well. But really, any country that has sugar maples, or black, red and silver maples, and that has the right climate (cold, freezing winters) has the potential to make maple syrup. But cold, freezing, longer winters are required for proper tree sap production, and our climate here in Canada is perfect for the production of maple syrup.
As for Canadian maple syrup production, the province of Québec is the biggest producer by far, making approximately 90% of all maple syrup in Canada. The other 10% comes from parts of Ontario and some of the other eastern provinces.
However, if you can get it, oftentimes the best maple syrup is the kind that is made by one maker, and is syrup that is not mixed with syrup from other makers. Sometimes maple syrup is blended for large production and sales, and the flavour becomes more homogenized.
Regional maple syrups can vary in flavour depending on many factors, such as: soil and mineral content that the trees are planted in, the species of maple trees the sap is harvested from, how much rain and snow they typically see in a given region and from season to season, how long that year's winter was and when the first thaw begins to happen, and most importantly: how long each maker boils down the tree sap to make it into syrup.
If you look at several bottles of maple syrup they can vary in colour and that is oftentimes due to how long the maker chooses to boil away the excess water from the tree sap. Lighter coloured syrup is usually boiled down less, and darker syrup is typically boiled down more and is more concentrated. However, the different minerals and other compounds in a particular farm's trees, soil and water can make a difference in colour too.
But generally, when you are able to get syrup made by one maker and from one batch, the variation of flavours become more apparent, and is oftentimes better. There are many maple syrup farms and festivals here in Canada where smaller makers sell their maple syrup, and that's often where the best stuff comes from. But smaller stores and specialty shops here oftentimes carry smaller batch maple syrup too.
I guess I should clarify though: there have been a couple times where I had small batch, single maker maple syrup that I thought tasted pretty good (in moderation), but as a general rule, maple syrup just isn't my cup o' tea. 😝
Real maple syrup is gonna be pricey.
But most syrup you can buy in America isn't actual syrup. It's just flavoured and coloured corn syrup.
Real, actual syrup takes a lot of effort and time to produce from maple sap. And America doesn't produce as much as it eats.
i think we're about equal, but america has a lot of crap in it so your quality is probably way better
370ml at walmart for $7.98 (generic brand, keep that in mind)
32oz of strawberry jam is $4.64 at walmart, standard smuckers brand
it all depends on the brands

I have about 250 sugar maples that I tap, run lines and send it to the sugar shack to process. I get about 200 bottles of syrup each season and give it out to clients, friends and family.
I know it is expensive to make, but I haven't paid for any syrup for about 18 years.
I know it was about 12 Canadian dollars a liter from the farm in 2022, not sure what the markup was/is once it goes to the grocery store.
I guess that's about £7 per liter or £2.3/330 ml when converted. It's pretty damned expensive in the UK then... Liquid gold!
@OfMiceandMen Oh man, if I had the trees I would love to tap trees and boil down the syrup. Good for you!
The US has different levels of maple syrup, from pure maple syrup down to partly watered down syrup.
Pure maple syrup in the US, depending on the brand, ranges from $9 to $13 for 16 fl. oz. (about 500 ml). At current US$-£ exchange rate, that's about £7 to £10 for 500 ml, or 1.4-2.0 pence/ml. That compares to @purplepoppy's numbers of 1.8-3.0 pence/ml.
That means maple syrup in UK is more expensive than in the US, though it's still pretty expensive in the US.
Per your update, most maple syrup in the US comes from Canada. However, some syrup comes from Vermont, and New York State.
Real maple syrup is expensive. It takes like 40 gallons of maple sap to make 1 or 2 gallons of syrup. Most people here use the fake cheap maple flavored corn syrup or another kind that is mostly corn syrup and a small amount of real maple syrup so it can be sold as maple syrup. The cheapest real maple syrup here in California is about $20 for a 1 quart jug, but it's kind of watery and not too syrupy like it's supposed to be. My dad used to make maple syrup in Connecticut when he was a kid. That means they didn't cook all the water out of it or they added water to stretch it out.
Yes, but not as expensive as th UK. It only comes from maples trees in a certain parts of the NE US and Canada, like Vermont and Canada. In most of N America people complain it’s too expensive and buy maple-syrup corn syrup instead of the good stuff! 🍁🤤
My understanding is a quart is about 950mL. You can get a quart of shite at walmart for a few bucks, i have some nice maple syrup that cost $35 though, so depends on what you're getting.
Yes you can very much taste the difference.
Depends on where you are. The northeast produces a lot if maple syrup and most places near can get it cheaply. Then we also have "fake" maple syrup which is basically just sugar that looks like syrup
In the Midwest US it runs anywhere from $8-28 for a 12-ounce bottle, depending on brand and quality.
Depends on the time of year but it is indeed very expensive for genuine pure stuff. And the depending on time of year part, Certain parts of the year where im from its not just expensive, its impossible to get.
The majority of the world's Maple Syrup comes from here in Canada and it's expensive here too. It shouldn't be but it is.
Like Canadian maple?
my cousin asked me to bring her some next month.
The USA also produces maple products.
E writhing is expensive in America. I bet maple syrup is twice e as much as it was BB (before biden)
Last time I checked it was $7 for a pound. I think, I don't know
No. There's some that's produced in New England
The farther away you are from Maple Syrup producing states the more expensive it is. And yes, pancakes loaded with maple syrup is the bomb. com.
Yeah it can cost $20 if you buy a quart in Vermont or $15 in you buy it in wholesale store like Costco or Bjs wholesale
Where I live about 7% less than the lower end of your scale.
Everything in the states is more expensive lately
For the same amount its about $5-7.
Not really 😉.
Good quality eal maple syrup is.
It's not only costly but it weaken down barely
