To lower the cost of eggs, anyone and everyone able gets small flock of chickens and raises eggs. Kids can do this work... and bring their boiled eggs for lunch. The volume will drive down price of eggs, boost economy for wire/chicken shelters. Chickens eat most anything including your discarded leftover chickens. Just not breads.

Goal: Reduce food costs, improve childrens character by practicing small farming

Effort: Moderate, takes some setup time and management to protect chickens.

I was just thinking about that yesterday. I live in the suburbs but it is srt of a rural suburb. There is a dairy farm in town and there are a few corn fields. There are many people that have farm animals like chickens and goats. Two people on my street have setups in their yards to raise chickens and they sell the eggs.

That's good to hear, I have quite a few doing the same. I haven't made the plunge yet but I attend to others chickens.

@exitseven If a lot of people have chickens in the area you would have to sell your eggs cheaper than the others or no on will buy yours. So you won't even make what it cost you to feed them.

@Daniela1982 thats my point though, the price will go down, market will find a balance as people realize how expensive it is to raise chickens and tend to them. There likely is no "economy" to it... no efficiency gained. But costs go down temporarily and economy is boosted slightly w activity. overall, people develop respect for those that produce eggs and don't grumble abuot $6-$8 eggs anymore.

@Daniela1982 I think that they do it as a hobby. My father had chickens and he used to have an "egg route" he would drive to friend's homes and deliver fresh eggs to them. He gave them away but it was something he liked to do.

A town in Holland gave any resident who wanted them three chickens and within a year had massive reductions in landfill, increased general public health, people who had the chickens started growing some basic foods at home.

I'll get some hens as soon as I know if I'm selling up and moving south or west.

You need 3 - they're flock animals and thrive in groups. My uncle used to have five. Best eggs I ever had and his garden improved dramatically.

My sister raises chickens but can't let them roam free because of raccoons and foxes. With the cost of the chicken coop, upkeep - bedding material - and cost of chicken food she could have bought a 10,000 thousand eggs from the store.

No. Beech martens make keeping any kind of bird in my garden to a challenge. I have fruit trees, those attract birds, birds attract predators. Just putting chicken in the garden won't work here.
