Who has more level a waitress/server or a restaurant hostess in the United States?

In the United States. I had heard that restaurant hostess in the USA do not receive tips and if they do sometimes it is a shared tips with the other restaurant staff in this case the servers.

Do restaurant hostess earn good salaries in teh USA, or specially in California? I also heard this about a restaurant hostess and I quote the comment from a person living in the USA and she told me this:

1. "Usually a hostess is promoted to waitress/server not the other way around" 2. Hostess does not get tips. They only seat people, Less responsibility, 3. A HOSTESS IS LESS THAN A SERVER".

Is this lady telling the truth or confused or it depends?

It is my understanding that hosts/hostesses make less than servers because they only get a small portion of the tips being shared with non-servers including cooks and dishwashers.

Wait staff in the places I've seen. Most hostesses are waiting to become servers in order to make bank on tips.
