What’s something you tried to make but turned into an epic failure?

I tried to make baked cheese crisps. Bake little piles of shredded cheese until they become a little burnt and crispy. I put the cheese on wax paper and baked. The cheese just malted all over the place and got stuck to the wax paper. Giant mess. I had to throw it all away.

My wife and I joke about this...

About 21-22 years ago, I was unemployed, so I would cook dinner while my wife was working. Something she taught me to make was this Italian beef stew roast or something like that. And, I've made it fine a few times. However, this one time - I think it was the 2nd or 3rd time - that I've made the Italian Beef, I screwed it up.

My wife is notorious for repackaging things and not labeling them or even mislabeling them on occasion. Well, on top of the fridge, she kept two identical containers of more or less identical looking stuff. I grabbed the one container, scooped out the right amount, and put it in the pot. I stir, simmer, etc. I taste it and think "Something's not right..." and "This is too sweet." It doesn't get better. I am worried. When my wife gets home, I ask her to taste it. The face she made could have been used for the poster of a horror movie. I mentioned and showed her all the ingredients I used which were according to the recipe she gave me. That included me showing her that I got the flour from this container on top of the fridge. "That's not flour! That's powdered sugar!" They look alike and were in identical unlabeled containers and I didn't bother smelling; I thought they were both flour.

Anyway, that was it: I used powdered sugar when I should have used flour to thicken the sauce. It was a disaster. The raccoons ate well that night.

So, that is our benchmark for disasterous cooking. Sort of like our "kitchen 9/11".

We also tried this Italian chicken wing recipe. That was magnificently heinous. The raccoons ate well that night.

Only a few months ago, we had another disaster, but I don't remember what it was. We are still scarred by the Italian Beef from over 20 years ago.

When I was 16 I bought a do it yourself ginger bread house from the grocery store and I had never cooked anything in my life before, not even a sandwich. The ginger bread house did end up looking like a house, but it was a very messy and ugly house and it didn't taste that great for what you would expect from a ginger bread house. I think around a week or less later, one of the roofs began to fall down a little bit. I made it myself without help from my parents or my grandma or my friends and that might have been one reason it was such an ugly gingerbread house.

I can relate to mishaps in the kitchen. I once attempted to create a traditional Italian panna cotta. Somehow, I miscalculated the gelatin, and it refused to set. Instead of a delightful, creamy dessert, I ended up with a sweet, milky soup. It's part of the learning process and makes successes even sweeter. 🍮
