Should children leave out food for ghosts on Halloween?

Another custom was to leave out food offerings for them, often bread and cheese. It hasn't been that long since either custom largely died out.

Now children used to go door to door asking for food for the dead. And we all know children like to put food out for Santa. So why not have them put out food to attract friendly ghosts?
