Is anyone else having Matteuccia Struthiopteris with supper?

Ok, so , like, as I mentioned in a previous post, last nite we went smelting 'til the wee hours of the morning which might be why I'm a little groggy today. Especially since one of the tricks of fishing for smelts is to bait them with beer. For some reason drinking lots of beer just seems to attract them. Another of the marvels of Mother Nature, I guess.

So, anyways, to go with our local fishy feast we decided to add another marvel of Mother Nature and a Maine delicacy, Matteuccia Struthiopteris! Also known as the Ostrich Fern but us local hickz call 'em Fiddleheads! (<--- Link to article about fiddleheads) We usually just boil ours and add lots of salt -n- butter, same as the smelts but what a yummy supper it will be and I'm so looking forward to the yumminess of Maine splendor when I ask, Is anyone else having Matteuccia Struthiopteris with supper?

It's called translated "Ostrich Panache" here but I never heard someone eats that plant.
Some people eat cooked burn nettle mush with butter but it's not really good, Wild spinach or bear leek Is something I collect ocasionally for salads if I find some, but I have enough edible herbs in my garden, like every witch.

I love green herbs. I would definitely be interested in planting my own one day. Such as peppermint or broccoli sprouts.

Nope, I had Allium tricoccum. Known as ramps in West Virginia. Ramps and raccoon stew over egg noodles to be precise.

Never been a fan of fiddleheads. No amount of boiling, butter or salt can take away from it tasting like eating grass, for me. I find them so bad, I'd rather deal with a Brussel sprout, which also needs a ton of manipulation to taste worthwhile!

We don't have them here and they don't sell them in stores, so I've never had them. But I wouldn't mind giving them a try. 😃

When I first read the question, I thought Matteuccia Struthiopteris was some kind of bird.
Struthio means ostrich in Latin. And I am familiar with the dinosaur Struthiomimis dinosaur.

I had Opuntia that I forraged. I did some experiments with it. It mimics psillium and probably could stand in for it. Pureed and heated the consistency aproached polysaccharide gels. Definitely not apatizing but a surpriseing quality. I think the plant might have uses beyond just a food source.

I don't think so at present, but I've been watching YouTube, and how leaves are good for our diets.

So perhaps I might, if I see some on the shelves in the store, after your descriptive delights of eating them.

Fiddle heads in the grocery store is a sure sign of spring. I love them. Unfortunately, I'm the only one in the family who does.
