Have you had an Italian steamed pie?

Question

I was doing some research on discontinued foods, and I came across two separate accounts that mentioned steamed pies in Italian cafés. Apparently, they used to cook pies in the steam produced by coffee machines, but the practice was banned by health inspectors.

Both sources reference the same area, which just happens to have a lot of Italians, but I was wondering if they carried out this practice elsewhere? We know places like New York have a ton of Italians, so does it still exist there?

Obviously, it's a question for you oldies and Italians?

I never tried an Italian steamed pie but one of my favourite appetizer meals during vacations was beef pot pie. In my Chinese family we will use boiled tea bags to flavour our eggs so that our eggs end up with a salty tea like flavour after adding salt too. It is my favourite way to eat eggs second only to the fermented eggs we sometimes make by soaking cooked eggs in salt water.

I am of Italian heritage and my father used to take me into the Italian neighborhood in town. We would buy all sorts of stuff and I remember a basement we would go to where they made sausages. I imagine that the board of health got paid off to stay away. I think the local Mafia guys would feed the rival gangs into the sausage grinder.

I've never had an Italian steamed pie, but they were banned for a reason. And if I knew the pie was cooked that way, I wouldn't eat it.
