It's actually an American invention by a British American baker that originates back in the 1800s, but the German chocolate cake actually is a Texas origin from the 1950s.

I assume you mean a specific chocolate cake, because chocolate was a thing here in Germany before the United States even existed. There are a number of weird pseudo-German foods, that were invented in the United States, e. g. sauerkraut balls. 🤷‍♂️

There are some fine bakers up there in Strasbourg FR, which was once part of Germany.
