I'm 4'11, so I hear it all the time. I see "cute" as like for bunnies and rainbows. Like if I'm dressed up, hearing "cute" almost sounds patronizing - like a little girl playing dress up ("aww, omg, my daughter is wearing heels, how cute").
Lol if it's strangers, I know they don't mean it bad. If it's even friends and family, cuz I know everyone has different connotations for cute.
If the person is my boyfriend, I don't wanna hear cute, like ever. Cute is for adorable, I'd rather hear like pretty or beautiful etc. Cuz it sounds more for a grown woman. I get mistaken for a teen all the time, I want to be seen as a grown up! :,( lol
But any compliment is better than no compliment, so I don't get bothered on the outside when I hear it from strangers, I just say thank you and smile.
I do hear that guys tend to call girls "cute" if they consider her relationship material, and like "sexy" if they probably don't take her more serious than a ONS. Not sure if this is true, or just what my guy friends tell me to make me feel better lol :x

Yea I don't know I call the cute all the time though cause Id love to be caled cute if I was their height but maybe it has to do cause they feel like they're a child yur talking to.. Honestly I'm tall so no idea but if my any of my shorties (best short friends) didn't like it I wouldny ever do it again
I don't mind being called cute if they have other terms of endearment for me, but it depends on the situation. If it's my boyfriend, I don't want him to be like my grandmother who still finds me as cute as I was when I was a child. I'd say sweetheart is a better pet name for a relationship.
Because feminism. Complimenting a girl = you're obviously a no good mysognistic creep who needs to stop being such a neanderthal and learn sensitivity, so then they can not like you for not being alpha and confident enough.
That or they get pissed off having to use a stool to reach the cupboards in their kitchen.

Depends on the culture and what they associate with the word cute. tl;dr just ask her what she likes.
It seems that lots of people in the US don't like it as much because they think it is patronizing, but coming form Japanese culture cute feels like the respectful/loving alternative to things like sexy or hot (which to me sound a bit more crude or like they don't care about me, just my body). So personally, I like being called cute because it makes me feel like they like me both as a person and how I look. (So kinda like they are saying I like you and want to make you happy, rather than your body looks good and I want it). It makes me feel more comfortable and loved.
In comparison sweetheart and alternatives some people mentioned I don't like as much just because they sound kinda old and weird in comparison and common ones right now like baby bother me more (in a similar way to how cute bothers some other people). I do relate a bit to the 'but I don't want to be so small' thing, but kinda came to accept it because its not like I'm gonna get any taller so might as well find a taller guy who loves me and leave reaching high stuff to him :>I'm 5"5 so not short short but still fairly short and i hate it when people call me cute for being so small. It makes me feel like a pet. Someone says cute and i think of fluffy bunny's and new born puppies not an adult. So no, small girls don't like being called cute.
I'm always getting called cute, but fuck it... I know I am an adorable little bastard.
Because we are sick of hearing it. Lol It makes me feel like a 3 year old girl. I want to feel like a woman.
Yeah, I'm 5'0" and hate the idea of being called "cute." Like, no. I'm not pocket-sized or a fluffy little bunny just because I'm short. It's like you're undermining me entirely just because I'm technically the height of a child (which was hard enough for me to get over in the first place). You can say my eyes or nose or lips are cute, I don't care, but never just tell me "you're cute."
In some culture, cute is something that you say it to people who aren't unattractive lol.
like when a guy friend shows a picture of his sister who isn't pretty. then we go "Awwww she's cute"They relate cute and small with youth. Short girls always feel so small already and its hard because everyone treats you as a kid and you want to fit in more. Being small is hard and we just want to feel our own age not two.
I'm 5ft 1in and have been called a cutie from time to time. Doesn't bother me.
Because it feels like you see us as a child when you say it too often. And never say it when we are mad that's the WORST. I can be really mad and I can beat ass too even tho I'm short
Because I feel like people treat me like a child and don't take me seriously especially when they pet my head. I'm not an animal... I'm 5' 2
BEcause cute sound like a compliment for pet and child
because i'm so sick of being called cute
