In general when anybody guy or girl says "whatever" means one thing or another according to context. It could mean:

    1. "I'm annoyed and don't want to talk". Usually during and argument or after that argument with you. Either because they wanted you to convince you of and idea and they couldn't, either because you used a tone of voice or words that hurt their feelings, or either because they felt you didn't try to understand them at all and they didn't wanted you to agree only some empathy. Maybe you were right, maybe the other person was, but the thing is this person is annoyed regardless of who was right. However, this can be also after a bad day and the person is not annoyed with you but with someone else or with themselves and they're not in the mood to talk.

    2. "I have not interest at all in you or what you are saying". In this scenario is usually not an argument, is more like someone is telling something and the other person instead of giving an opinion just says this. Is basically a way to show lack of interest.

    3. "I couldn't understand what you said but I don't want you to repeat it to me". In this scenario is for example if you are explaining a story or giving an advice but you are talking fast, giving too much information at once or you are using complicated language, and the other person gets distracted or can't get everything but doesn't want you to say it again. They know that they might get distracted again or miss words again, and better not waste your breath if there's not going to be a difference.

    4. "I don't like this topic, let's change topic". It's just that they don't want to talk about something because they find that boring, sad or annoying. Usually after the "whatever" they would change topic themselves asking a question or telling something in this case.

    5. "I have nothing nice to say, I don't want to hurt your feelings or get you mad, let's change topic". Similar to the one right above, but with a subtle difference. In this scenario is not that the topic you are talking about is boring, is that you are asking for advice, an opinion or support and the other person avoids giving that advice because they think their opinion might sound rude, because they don't really support this person and they might get mad the other person, and they want to avoid an argument.

    6. "You beat about the bush, so I stopped listening, let's go to the main point again". It's similar to point 3 and 4 to some extent, but on this case the person doesn't want to change topic but to return to the original point, and it's not that this person has a trouble understanding you, is that you were started giving information and now it doesn't relates to the main point anymore. In this case after "whatever" the person would say something to help to remember you what was the main topic you were talking about before you beat about the bush.

Depends on her expression and tone. It can mean many things.

The girl in the pic doesn't want to converse anymore about the topic and is annoyed.

She might be recanting an anecdote in which this statement and behavior was involved.

She might be making a joke.

She might be acting for a dramatic scene.

It depends on the context of the situation.

This word is a habitual word mostly used in Urban/Suburban America. At least in the way your using it in this post. Its a sign that they are "err merr gerrd" valley white girl mentalities with extremely low attention spans. Its also a sign that they care more about what happened on the Kardashians rather than who is president etc.. They have some growing up to do is what I'm getting at. Immaturity at its purest form. So when I hear girls say "whatever" like this, I usually drop her like I would a dinner plate that you noticed had someone else's hair in it.

@Boppy That IS kind of the message they are trying to send. It's not that they are giving up on trying to improve together, so much as that they have decided that whatever the current issue is, isn't worth more stress.

What I mean is that it seems to be giving up on finding an agreement and/or closure ever. I'd prefer a "let's mull over what we said today and talk about this again some other time" or a one-word way of saying that if it exists.

@Boppy I hear ya, man... I feel like women rely way too much on subtle hints, and leaving things unsaid, for them to get as uptight as they do about men not taking them at their expressed word.

It’s a passive term for either “leave me alone now” or “I don’t want to make a decision” or “You’ve frustrated me to the point where I don’t feel like explaining myself”.

Common theme is that they don’t want to deal with whatever problem is at hand, for their own personal reasons.

Depends on her personality and mentality. Some of us do mean it, especially when we grow tired of caring. And then you have the really fickle ones who rather test your patience than to be honest with you. Be careful with those. Maturity says a lot and remember that actions speak louder than words.

This is an expression that is used to terminate a conversation that is leading towards a toxic direction.

It is basically a term that signifies that the conversation is over and that both parties stay with their statement and that no further arguments are needed that will only make things worse.

Guys hate it because it does takes the ground under their feet and that the argument is basically over.

It means I am not willing to continue this ridiculous conversation where I'm either upset because you've proved me wrong and I hate that or you're completely in the wrong and I have no desire to continue going back and fourth on the subject indefinitely.

Context required. Could be used as a dismissive phrase, scathing sarcasm, part of an ironic joke, or passive aggressive end to an argument. It's a versatile word.

It could also just mean that whatever, you do you. But I doubt that is the kind your curious about.

It means that SHE needs to learn to communicate better.
Sometimes it's because she has reached her frustrational max and doesn't want to talk anymore. But she should say that instead.
