Is cute really a complement?

I've been called way worse sure, and being called cute does give me the warm and fuzzys sometimes but I'm a little worried about it to.
I'm not convinced a girl calling me cute is the kind of response i should strive for, do you girls really like and want cute?

Just worried cut might mean something like adorable, innocent, childish or even the wrong kind of harmless.
Girls call puppy's and tiny little old men cute, so I'm sure it's exactly great.

I showed my female friend my opening message to a girl I just fried to talk to and she said "its cute", I was aiming for funny smooth talker, or it was kind of a corny pick up line so it being interpreted as "cute" kind of bums me out.

When I read this post... My thoughts were she's calling you "cute" as a way to acknowledge your effort and to let you know she's not impressed... I only call guys cute to demean them... And that's usually a troll or someone hurting my feelings... Like "aweee how cute! You're upset! Now go write it in your diary because I don't care" That's how I use the term cute towards a male... Cute from me... Is never a good thing unless you are a cute female or my gay best friend looking cute... I don't like to be called cute because it's definitely not a compliment... Not to me at least... GREAT question! I had to really think about my answer...

Thank you for the detailed response. I'm starting to think cute is annoyingly ambiguous, I'm sure my friend meant well, I was just worried I was viewed as well like a puppy, girls like them but will never be with or sleep with a puppy you know?

I had kind of forgotten it could be use the way you say, I mean I geuss it already made me feel like less of a man in there eyes even if they are being nice and mean well.
I dont think I've upset a girl enough to call me cute trying to hurt me like you described yet, so at least I'm doing that right🤷‍♂️
I do try to avoid calling girls pretty, cute, hot or gorgeous. I've thought those are all either demeaning or at least over used. So I try to complement key features I like or use "stunning" as a blanket term.
