Use behavioral characteristics to understand people instead of using them to argue. Calling them out does no good, even for a skilled therapist or psychiatrist. You just "read between the lines", understand what the person's goal is for saying a certain thing, and decide how to respond based on your understanding of them. I don't think I've ever seen confrontation lead to the desired outcome between two equals.
