Situational: is she uninterested?

Silvanndude
I met this girl at the end of fall semester. Come spring semester, we talk (not like that) but don't see each other all the time. We had a really long talk that I kind of broke off to go do something. But I like her so I try slowly expressing my interest: I ask for her instagram, start talking to her more directly, but she seems shy suddenly, but to me only. She gives pretty short answers, sometimes, but that is also situational. The thing is also that I sometimes see her look at me. When we're in a group (we're never alone) and someone else is talking her eyes flit around to the one who's speaking and at me frequently for no apparent reason. When ever I look at her back she looks off quickly. We end up playing a nervous game of "may our eyes never meet." I tried holding her gaze once, (instead of just bouncing mine off hers) and she looked nervous and was like "what?" And then I'm like, "'what,' what?" She's an introvert by the way and we're both in college.

Update: I know it was stupid, but I asked her friend whether she hates me. I didn't mention me liking her at all; I really don't want to come on too fast. I got a long convoluted "no." Later she followed up with a "are you asking because you like someone?" Again, SUPER up in the air and ambiguous. This girl is smart.

(And I said I just want to be friends. Probably a mistake)
