Respect is given and received. It is a mutual thing. If the parents respect their child, the child will respect them. So, if one parent disrespects their child, their child may not feel respect for that parent anymore, and may have more respect for the other parent.

@thegold1 As she mentioned, I'm American. In my experience here, I don't see any increased hatred of fathers over mothers. I've had friends and siblings who've butted heads with both parents. Hell, I've gotten pissed at my mom and my dad.
