He is my supervisor. The female coworker and him don't work together but she tries to strike up conversations with him and sit next to him in team meetings. He seems to like her as a person but is married with kids. Recently she asked me what he studied in college. Does she want to date him?

Without knowing them, I don't think it means she has some romantic interest. At worst I'd think she's a gossiper. No, wait, at worst I'd think she wants to advance her career by kneeling under his desk, but for such a little thing I wouldn't think that far.
About sitting next each other during a meeting, that's a formal event, meh.
Conversing with him.. maybe she sees him as a nice person and she feels safe around him.
Why do you ask anyway, what's your concern? Do you like him? :P
The academic background of employees is important.
This is why it's on résumés and job applications and why college transcripts are critical.
yes but its not important if you dont ever work together. and also she never asked any questions about anyone else
That's not necessarily so.
Something you don't realize is that many companies need to be certified that they do good work.
For instance, ISO-9000 is a standard regarding quality management. For a company to become ISO-9000 certified, one of the requirements is to provide evidence that the employees can do the job including having an adequate educational background. As a contractor, I've had a customer manager or two ask me for a copy of my transcript just for this purpose.
Now, I don't know about your work situation, but I am confident that she may have a legitimate reason for asking about his background. For instance, if she is a manager, she may want to bring him into her team. Then again, maybe she is being smart and nosy. All's fair in love and war and information = power.
she is an intern
and what is so smart to inquire that? she will soon graduate. and she never talks about other coworkers
Perhaps I am a little confused...
HE is YOUR supervisor.
But, you say simply that SHE is "a coworker".
What is her story?
Is HE her supervisor as well so you both are under his team?
Or is she on a different team?
And what is her level? Yours? His? A different level entirely?
Without context, we can't give you an adequate answer.
i am a working student and he is my supervisor. she is an intern and he does not supervise her. we all are in the same team however
OK. Thanks.
Well, I will simply say this that I wrote earlier...
All's fair in love and war and information = power.
Frankly, she's behaving like a smart male investigating a female of interest.
the team is divided in sub groups that don't work together
so you do agree that she probably wants to date him?
and how is that smart of her? he is married with kids and does not plan on leaving his wife. also she is not pretty enough for him
"and how is that smart of her?"
Being female, you are too focused on romance and not focused enough on life path.
A fundamental truth of reality is that the more information that you know about someone, then the better you are able to 1) predict them, 2) use or otherwise employ them, 3) sway or manipulate them, 4) extort them or otherwise defeat them. BUT - and this is a female strength - 1) you are better able to understand them - their wants, desires, and needs - and 2) be empathetic toward them and 3) communicate or support them.
" he is married with kids and does not plan on leaving his wife."
Perhaps, but you don't necessarily know that and nothing in life is stable except change. But, again, you are focused on romance. That is not always the reason to want to know more about someone as I just discussed above.
"she is not pretty enough for him"
You definitely do not know that.
She likely looks a bit like her mother and her father found her mother attractive enough to (presumably) marry her. Men are not as picky as you think. And older men like this guy are not boys and know that a woman is a lot more than just looks - looks which are temporary...
yes but all women flirt with him and his wife is way hotter than her
also i for instance look nothing like my mom
You are basing all attractiveness on looks. That's false.
However, if "all women flirt with him", he's likely a rather good-looking guy.
And if "his wife is way hotter than her", so what? If the wife is a succubus from Hell, he may want someone different.

All of this is irrelevant though.
YOU have it in your mind that she is interested in him for romance.
That is not necessarily the case and asking about someone's academic record isn't exactly a major hint that she's interested in him romantically, but perhaps for some other reason.
Instead of asking us, ask her why she wants to know about that. There may be a very good career-related reason.
atm he is building a house with her so it does not seem like he plans on leaving his wife anytime soon
and if it was career related, why would he approach him if he doesn't even know his academic backround and what projects he is working on? if she was just trying to network she would approach other coworkers as well and not just the most attractive one
You never know. We never know.
People have reasons for doing what they do.
Move on.
I've said all that I need to say in regard to this question.
its most likely not career related and i think you have the same feeling after all the information i provided you
No lol
what does it mean then? she has no business asking this
That's not even a weird thing to ask about someone
yeah but why would she take an interest in him? she never talks about anyone else in this office and also never tries to chat with other coworkers that she doesn't direclty work with
You just seem like the nosey office, Karen, in the situation. Mind your business.
lol its not my fault that she asks me
It's your fault you care enough to waste energy on it.
