Where does the idea that looks don't matter originate?

They matter. They're not just as cut and dried and explainable as everyone would like them to be. And since nobody generally comes flat out and says, "I don't find you attractive" most people feel like they're inside some gray area.

If I would have to guess I'd say it was women that started the idea that looks don't matter. And for a couple reasons. 1. To make thier less attractive girlfriends feel better. But 2. Because even if a woman isn't attracted to you she still wants you to be attracted to her. She still wants the ego stroke of you asking her out. Even if her rejection of you is inevitable.
