Why would you friendzone a guy you like?

I ran into my highschool crush yesterday. We are both in the beginning of our twenties.
We had some time to talk to eachother and eventually we went to the part where we had a crush on eachother and that she friendzoned me. But then she said during our ‘friendship’ she liked me on and off.

I didn’t dare to ask but now I keep wondering, why would you friendzone someone you’re into.

Am I wrong for having new hope too haha? She is kinda the one that got away

I don't think most would but that doesn't seem to be the problem with this girl. You state that she said she admitted to liking you on and off. So that indicates that she was on the fence or unsure of how she really felt and the assumption of her being into you is not entirely true. Now if you had just said she admitted to being into you then I would say that is odd but it seems to me like your evaluation of how she thought of you and hers differ. I am going to just guess that because she couldn't make up her mind and went back and forth on it that she ultimately decided that staying friends was the safer and more logical choice for her.

Sometimes girls are unsure of what they want, especially in the early stages of life. It's that simple. And she isn't totally sure if she is into you. You can talk to her a bit, to see if you hit it off, but if not, then I think both of you should move on.

And ever since i have been seeing her in person again, she is more physical. In group setting she comes to say hi to me first and asks if i will be there if it’s something we typically both go to.

Don't believe everything. You should focus more what she told directly to you and what you interpreted by yourself in her suggestions and connotations. Your ego will always over valuate importance of your person for her, this is human nature. When you remove all this wish think an imagination, the brutal truth is she "friend-zoned" you because you were not the type she wants. Not necessarily too bad or too ugly but just you didn't fit perfectly in her perception of a partner. Just look forwards and don't bother your head with such trivialities like this.
