Does anybody else feel they are being talked down to at times by some mechanics?

Not all of them, but some mechanics seem to talk down to me. At least this is my perception. Is it because I am a woman, or do they just do this everybody? This is "not a women's lib militant question" Genuinely curious. Thanks.

I never did that to people, but I know plenty of other mechanics that were arrogant pricks to customers.

It's a combination of "shop culture," sexism, and the fact they assume customers know nothing about vehicles. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know the first thing about cars, but that still doesn't make their behavior acceptable.

Unfortunately that is often the case. I know several women, including family members, that have been talked down to, taken advantage of or downright lied to by car mechanics or car salesmen. These people have earned their reputation!

Occasionally and then I look for a new mechanic. The only time when I've had a mechanic behave like that was when driving cross-country & I pulled off the road to get a noise checked. He probably saw my plates were 2,000 from him and figured I was an easy mark. Got gas and left. Anyone who does that is an asshole and I'm sure they would target women more than men ask friends until you can get a recommendation

How much do you know about cars? I'm no mechanic but I try to understand as much as I can before taking it to a mechanic so it at least appears I know what I'm talking about so as to not get fleeced.

It probably depends on the mechanic. I'm sure thierare some chauvanist mechanics. But I'm sure there are some mechanics that do it to everyone.

I don't feel like it's really happened to me.

by the way there's a website called automd. com that allows you to type in what your car is doing. And then it diagnosis the problem. And then it asks you whether you want to try to fix it yourself or take it to a mechanic. If you choose to fix it yourself it walks you through how to fix it. If you decide to take it to a mechanic, it tells you places in your area to take it to. It even gives a breakdown of parts vs. Labor and tells you the labor per hr. From different shops in your area.

I've looked at some of the replies, car maintenance is easy, everyone is capable of doing their own car maintenance, without taking courses.

If you can't be bothered doing car maintenance, do what I do buy a folding cycle, and put it on public transport. I go one better I rarely use public transport. In a short period of time you'll be super fit!

Based on my experience & observation it is ENTIRELY cuz your a woman. It's BS.

Plus, the opposite! Don't ASSume ik jack shit about cars cuz I got a dick!! I put gas in & it goes! Anything beyond that is a mystery!
