There are multiple factors at work here. Evolutionary biology dictates that a “bad boy” is likely from warrior stock. Maybe not socially conforming, but a strong protector and provider when hunting was an important part of keeping a family and tribe. We’re not as far removed from that lineage as some people like to think. It’s just that now we have other ways to provide and protect. Which is why women are ultimately attracted to men with wealth and power, even when they’re not so “nice”.
The psychology at play applies to men and women equally. We have a desire to be needed and wanted so strongly that we might be that one special person in all the world who can reform a wicked soul through our love alone. It’s an old romantic notion.
