What's going on in girls' minds when they suddenly start acting distant?

I am very interested in how this works. As far as I know, this is not a rare phenomenon and I am not the only one who has encountered it. My girlfriend and I have a great relationship, but the only thing I don't like about her is her apathetic episodes, when she becomes cold, distant, unenthusiastic and passive and doesn't say what's wrong. She sometimes gives dry replies, which can easily be interpreted as passive aggression and "yeah yeah sure, now f- off", but when the apathy passes, she says that she never puts disdainful thoughts even in her dry messages and that she loves me very much. Girls, what happens to you in such moments that you lose the desire to communicate with your loved one who wants to help and support you? When I am in a bad mood or feel apathetic, I am still ready to communicate with my girlfriend, I never distance myself from her and talking to her helps me calm down and distract myself. It's a bit sad that it only works one way. It's a bit sad that it doesn't work the other way around.
