Why do over 90% of women in India and Turkey consider themselves beautiful, while less than 30% do in the UK and Japan?

I recently came across a study about how women perceive their own beauty, and it really caught my attention.

According to the report, confidence levels are sky high in India 96% and Turkey 91%, but shockingly low in Japan 26%.

I can understand the factors behind the results for India and Turkey; however, I find it difficult to explain why the figure is so low in Japan. In my view, Japanese women are typically very beautiful and elegant, which makes this outcome quite surprising.

Why do you think there is such a disconnect between reality and self perception in Japan and UK compared to the others?

Beauty is subjective anyway. It could be that in India and Turkey, women are more self-conscious than anywhere else about what standards beauty are.

Japan does not surprise me, just like Korea. Beauty standards in Asia are perceived differently. A lot of Asian women undergo plastic surgery to increase and/or modify the shape of their noses as well as the shape of their eyes to match the ones of Caucasian women that are taken as example.

What I totally fail to understand is that more than 60% of the US women find themselves beautiful. I guess that they haven't looked at themselves in a mirror lately.

According to the CDC, during August 2021–August 2023, the prevalence of obesity in adults was 40.3%. Unless obesity is a factor in beauty, I fail to see how that result can be accurate.

I think it’s because social isolation due to collective cultural alienation is rampant in Japan and UK. I read over 70% of college students in Britain feel pathological loneliness so severe it borders on mental illness.

UK here. I can guarantee that 29% is an upper bound on the percentage of women here who are beautiful in the traditional sense.

I work in an establishment with 300 female employees, and only 2 are wholesale attractive.

I’ve never been to the UK, but I always imagine British women as blonde and blue-eyed. How can they be unattractive? I keep hearing that women there aren't good-looking what's the reason for this reputation?

I think this is partly cultural. We do have attractive women, they seem to show themselves in summer, where suddenly, it seems everybody is attractive. The sun does something to people. If you see Aussie women they always seem to be so hot.

So yes, I am exaggerating, slightly.

But generally I think British women have bad habits. They overeat, sleep around, don't work out, smoke, etc. 66% of adults are overweight in the UK. So we do have attractive women, and the ones that are attractive can be very attractive. There is a super stunner in my work who looks sensational. But they seem to be quite rare beasts. And the women just burn themselves out early with bad habits and excessive weight.

And yes, the sun is a creative force. The mood changes and you become creative and happy. We can have week after week where it is raining and you can go a month without seeing the sun. It does affect the mood and culture of a place.

@capriVib Most British women are natural brunettes, the majority of blondes come out of a bottle. Also there's a very brief age range, let's say 18-33 where women are actually attractive.

That's interesting. I really thought the typical British look was more like Taylor Swift or Emma Watson, the way Hollywood portrays them. Thanks for the insight, I guess I’ll have to go there and see the reality for myself one day to know for sure.

On the basis of what I see on a day to day basis here, I would say that UK women are overconfident...
