I love my girlfriend but she tells made-up stories?

Sometimes to find something to talk about, she makes up stories, telling things that supposedly happened to her but actually didn’t - like seeing a UFO, a mysterious man appearing in the garden during a girls' night, an old lady telling her years ago to buy Bitcoin etc. These are clearly fake stories, and I pretend to believe them so as not to hurt her, because I know she does it just to have conversation topics. But now I'm tired of it, and yesterday I jokingly told her that her imagination is really wide. She wasn't expecting that response, but at least she didn't try to justify her lies. It's still bothering me - even if it's well-intentioned, is this a red flag?

I do not think it is all that bad. This is a common enough thing.

Your girlfriend just need to learn that she can tell an engaging story about her normal breakfast if she wants to. It does not need to be spectacular to be special. The storytelling does enough. Also nice to not have to perpetually remember and cover for these supposed lies.

It's called self-aggrandizing, and it is a problem. It's a clue that she feels the need or want to puff herself up, make herself seem like interesting and important things happen to her, that she's someone worth knowing and talking to. It's a byproduct of low self-esteem, likely.
The problem part is that it erodes trust, and without trust, relationships become pointless, meaningless, or worse.

I'd say its a red flag because both of you two were leading each other on. This is fun and playful when its a substitute for not having anything to talk about but then it needs to happen in honesty.
