Insult as a way of flirting?

Guys do you ever insult a girl as a way of flirting? Today this guy who used to like me (don't know if he still does) made a comment about my height. I am short and he made it seem as if being short was something bad so I just responded to him with "Haha...very funny" in a sarcastic manner. Then he just mentioned that there is nothing wrong with a girl who is short. So guys do you ever insult a girl as a way of flirting? And might this have been his way of flirting?
