Teachers and older adults bring up the topic of marriage often in our convos, but it's as though they don't see me as the type of girl that dates around. I'm 22 years old and have never been a relationship.

What makes a girl seem like girlfriend material vs. marriage material? Are marriage material girls less attractive?

In my opinion it means you're going to be passed by most guys while they sleep around or attempt to until they feel ready to settle down and want a gal that is worthy and hasn't slept around like he did or attempted to do.

In my opinion:

- girlfriend material is pretty, pleasant, puts out often

- marriage material is having traits of a good wife and mother

Are marriage material girls less attractive?

Depends on the guy though it seems for most guys marriage material gals are less attractive when he's young and looking to have fun and more attractive when he's old and looking to settle down.

Marriage "material" girls are beautiful, they are much more attractive, they've got their act together. They've got what it takes to start a family.

They're probably just saying they don't see you jumping from guy to guy / you take your relationships seriously.

There's nothing wrong with being dating material either, you just need to look at the context they're saying all this from.

Not All Girlfriends can be Good Wives. And not all Good Wives could have been Girlfriends. There is a fine line between the two. So don't worry!

To me, they would have to be one in the same. How are you going to get married if you aren't in a relationship with a girlfriend? That makes no sense whatsoever. If you're marriage material, you have to be girlfriend material, whereas not every girlfriend you want to become your wife.

Hmm I have read if you want to have happy marriage, marry a less attractive woman. Which doe make sense on some levels - how can you really focus on anything if you're worried about your wife's fidelity all the time?

However, that is conventional wisdom... I'm not sure whether marriage material is really a complement or not these days - the divorce rate is through the frigging roof, sounds like a generational gap to me.

They have to be a girlfriend and prove themselves before they are marriage material, so I don't buy into whatever they are feeding you.

For me, I need to be attracted to a girl and she needs to seem interesting for me to pursue her (i.e date worthy). To become girlfriend material, sexual tension needs to be build, a certain chemistry needs to exist, trust needs to earned, an I have to like her personality. To become marriage material, means she's really a great woman that I love and have been through some stuff with...

What they are telling you is is to reassure your insecurities with compliments. You're not marriage material
