Do you judge someone based on their texting habits?

This: "hi hw r u wht u do"
and this: "hi, how are you and what do you do?"
are different.

And I totally judge someone based on their texting habits. I'm no grammar nazi, but proper punctuations and not too many abbreviations are not that hard to use. So if a grown up (over 18) still texts like the first line, I think it says something about the person. I most likely won't reply to a guy who texts me like that, because I don't feel like I could have a decent, intelligent, stimulating conversation with him.

I automatically think that the person who texts like that is quite lazy or doesn't care if they're texting me. I dont see how its poor to judge someone that way *ahem ahem* haha, but I think it's normal. Its like, what if your boss texted or emailed you and you reply to it like "Hey Boss. Srry I missd wrk 2day. I wsnt feelng ny gud. M gnna hav 2 mss d day off. Srry agin Boss. Il b thre tmrw. Tnx" LOL. What more when you're in a relationship with someone who says "Ily" or "I luv yew" or whatever.. you won't be able to take that seriously

I don't think it's very intelligent of you to judge someone based on one flimsy characteristic. Using shortened phrases is a time saving technique, it has nothingto do with being decent, or smart, or stimulating. . . There is much more to take into account when sizing someone up. If you could 'say no' for such a trivial thing, you're too picky.

Shortened phrases only save time if you're a really slow typer, otherwise it should take longer for you to think of a word and shorten it down than just thinking of the word. Unless you think of the shortened word first, which is really bad in a lot of ways.

Prejudgment on things like this are nature. You can control how you act on these prejudgments and predictions but you will always have them and they'll always affect how you see a person at least slightly. To a normal intelligent person spelling and grammar should come incredibly easy and fast to the point where it'd be faster than trying to shorten it.

an intelligent, mature person would have no trouble spelling out words as they are and not making too many abbreviations. One or two in 1 sentence is tolerable, but not all the time. And the use of puncutations (or the lack of it) shows lack of credibility to me.

I study linguistics, so things like these are a pet peeve of mine. Besides, how much time are you hoping to save by leaving out a couple of letters? If you have time to text, then you have time to text properly.

I understand that this can be a pet peeve. I just think that it's a poor way to judge someone's character or intelligence. For the record, I'm not a person that shortens words for convenience in text, email or any form of written communication. Being a good person is the important part. You can be a good person without having great grammar.

As for me, the way they text does say something about a person. It doesn't make me less intelligent for demanding someone to be able to write and express themselves properly through texts. The point is, if you don't like the way someone texts, you just don't feel like continuing the convo anymore.

Rudy I'd agree that you shouldn't think someone's outright stupid or a bad person from how they type and such, but texting with bad grammar/spelling will definitely convey some measure of intelligence. I'm not going to think the person is stupid or anything, but I'm also not going to think he's extremely intelligent either.

As for the Asker, I can't imagine what it's like to study linguistics I've always thought that field was really interesting. It's a pretty strong pet peeve of mine as well, so I can only imagine what it's like for you, lol.

As long as they're coherent, I don't judge much. If their writing is so bad that I struggle to read it, I stop texting them and my opinion of their intelligence drops. It feels a little mean, but I'd appreciate it if they had the courtesy to put a little bit of effort into texting me.

I've gotten texts like that first line and I've stoppped replying because it means I have to re-read it like 50 times to have a clue as to what the person's saying. I notice a lot of the "hip hop wannabe cool kids" text like that to me and I just ignore them.

So yea I'll judge a person on their texting. I don't mind a word like "nothin'" but having to decode texts is not something I have time for.

I don't completely judge a person based on their texting habits but yes I being analyzing them (if it's worth the while) though not compulsively. But it does help connect dots as you continue interaction on various levels and mediums including personal :)

Some times it feels like a game to figure out what they are writing. I type kinda like how I write, but will I judge you if you have "bad texting habits"? No, because what matters is their personality and thoughts. It is just them using a different way to communicate their thoughts. In a way you could say it is more personal that they write differently because it is their own style. Just like their voice is different from yours, so can their writing.

Honestly, I do. But I find it worse for someone who can't get the their/they're your/you're things right. I write everything out, very little shorthand, and I edit it before I hit send, because I'm a nerd.

I usually overlook their mistakes in their their/they're/there, etc. when they seem smart in other aspects. I just figured that language isn't their forte. Besides, I always find it awkward when I, as a non-native speaker, corrects an American for example haha..

Well, if it happens only occasional I don't mind either. But if someone does it all the time, then that means they actually think what they type is correct. And if the are native speakers, then that's... well, sorry to put it so harshly, but then that's just too dumb for me.
