Masculinity is the attributes, behaviors, and roles associated with being a man. Simple as that.
And yes, masculinity is a social construct, most things are; Including:
*Gender
*Race
*Ethnicity
*Law
*Science
*Intelligence
*Education
*Higher education
*Civilized behavior
*Basic Human rights
*Art
*Love
*Hate
*Marriage
* And, Society Itself
And since a lot of these are made up of proven and obvious biologically created factors just as much as socially defined ones, It's more like social definitions instead of social constructs.
1. Decision-making/problem-solving skills
2. Self-Reliant
3. Motivated
4. Non-Conformist
5. Responsibility/Accountability
6. Health and virility
7. Thirst for knowledge
8. Compassion and ability to lift others up
9. Confidence but not arrogance
10. A manly Godd*mn beard
I fall short in a lot of these, But it's something to strive for.
Fake masculinity or hypermasculinity
Is a psychological term for the exaggeration of male attributes, behaviors, and roles. It places the most emphasis on physical strength, aggressiveness, And sexual conquest(Really just running your mouth about such things)
Besides being fake, It's also toxic and self-destructive.
Gender is NOT a social construct. It has been proven time and time again in Psychology studies of children. It is biological, hormonal, brain chemistry, and chromosomes. Also traits that are "masculine" and "feminine" are NOT socially created. These are traits defined by our testosterone/estrogen levels. Why people like you can't accept the differences between the sexes and understand that both are what us great. Why you argue so hard against fact and science in an attempt to make it seem like we are all the same.
I agree, OP. This about this: How come all traditional societies all share similar traits between masculinity and femininity, when there was NO way they could have interacted at ALL. It must mean it was there from birth, like the penis or vagina. Also, males of many species produce a lot of testosterone which dictates how said males function in their society. Female hyenas produce high levels of androgen (a typically male hormone), which is why hyena packs are female dominated.
everyone who chooses the traits they think are superior as belonging to them, easily says everyone should just understand everyone is different but great. obviously you dont think also or you would not be so upset about the possibility that your wrong and your beloved male traits are just human traits that having a penis does not grant you and any vagina can have more of.
if you really thought femininity and masculinity is great equally you wouldn't be ashamed of your femininity.
Look up chesty puller. The most decorated marine in U. S. history. When shown a flame thrower for the first time he responded "now where the hall do you put the bayonet". If memory serves he also managed to kill a Nazi soldier with his now and arrow he brought into battle because you know why the duck not?
@hellionthesage reminds me of Mad Jack Churchill. Mad Jack fought in both world wars, he landed on Normandy beach with a sword in his hand (there is a photo). He also had a confirmed kill with a long bow in WWII.
Women make better warriors. they dont fear death. guys get too wrapped up in ego and preserving themselves.. . Women fight for their convictions. guys fight for personal glory.
My point exactly! IIn an era of RELATIVE gender equality, a lot of girls have some or even all of these 'masculine' traits. I find that very ATTRACTIVE.
Hmm... Without waxing my upper lips I would have a feminine mustache too (well not a beard but it is facial hair), with that done, I am a perfect masculine man! XD
ok I understand feminism has destroyed the femininity of a woman, however, everything except number 9 - each person can attain. So all this is a ridiculous mytake sorry!
no they are not! Hypathia - research who she is! Was the first before Galileo and everyone who put this world forward into thinking! That was not a masculine trait. That is a trait in order to gain knowledge and understanding of how this world works. Not ridiculous masculinity! Everyone has these traits, if they want to attain it even the beard!
Hypathia was not the first, not even close. Creativity and forward thinking is clearly a masculine trait, almost everything that makes the world go around today was made by men.
@alphadoggystyle ok your point. Behind every man there is always a woman who may have influenced him. Unless you are gay then, I guess that one is true
Hypatia is predated by archemidies by between 73 to 93 years and there were many that came before him. So that is inaccurate as she was not even close to the first and two she was an exception not the rule. The reason why creativity/inventiveness and thinking are attributed to men (other than the over whelming majority of those groups being male) is because it was necessary for men to have those traits, it wasn't for women. That's why so few women shaped up into those fields because it wasn't necessary for them to make something of themselves to prove their Bali it was inherent. That was not and is not the case for men. This is fact. Yes women can have those traits but it is secondary and quite honestly women treat them that way they are vital for men however as with out them society will replace them with another who does have those traits (it's also why men get bored more easily then women to encourage exploration action and invention )
In that case we can say behind every "great" woman there is a greater man. Back in those days single mothers where not nearly as common as today, which also in a great way shows how bad it is for kids to grow up without a father considering how badly such kids are doing in general.
@hellionthesage you make perfect sense except, what was the problem back in those days? Women weren't really considered anything more than a rag that you can use and abuse so why should a woman even God forbid consider thinking that there are way more greater things in this world than cleaning and raising kids. I sound like a damn feminist now and I'm not but what most of us have to really understand is that women really never mattered in those days. Spartans used to have lovers for men, women were just breeders for soldiers and you know what the greatest Greeks have mentioned or was it Romans (I don't remember who said it but can be one of the same greatest, moronic empires) "may our enemies love women and may our friends love men!" What does that statement tell you right there, well, one homosexuality has existed for ages and accepted back in those days and women were a piece of shit! If I can find the name of the book that I have read - I will tell you about it!
@hellionthesage and not only that, I have been in Rome last year and we went to the colloseium and the it's amazing archeological sites - if notice very closely you will see on those walls a man proclaiming his love for another man - like what the hell. And that was predated back to those years!
I will still have to disagree with you - everyone can have such traits - women just weren't allowed to think. Can you imagine someone trying to control you in that aspect? Well actually we are all molded the ways society wants us to think but that's the truth. Once again, I am not a feminist but I hate when people don't recognize other people out there for their amazing contributions.
@hellionthesage another thing I would love for my man to have all of these characters, I would love a strong man but unfortunately, they don't exist so I have to learn how to open the damn jar myself and get on a step stool To reach a certain product of the shelf! Just saying for us short girls it isn't fun
@alphadoggystyle lol if you say so! But I agree kids growing up without a father shows a lot years later on these kids! Mothers teach kindness and love but fathers, obviously can teach these traits but on top teach how to be assertive and strong! And how to take care of themselves!
So women where rags to be used and abused yet you used hypatia a female philosopher mathematician and astronomer, was highly respected and taught philosophy and astronomy? Kind of contradictory isn't it? The fact is women could do what they wished in fact they had greater freedom then men did. A man had to act a certain way women did not. However it was easier for women to let men do all the manual labor because well one it was so physically grueling that many jobs where simply to difficult for women, two many jobs where dangerous hence women being perfectly content with men taking all the risks (as they do now (ironic you mention people being used and abused when it was men who where expected to fight and die, work themselves to death in a field only to give all that they worked for to their wife and family not women) and three raising children was safer and easier then what men had to go through. That's why few women stepped up and did what men did, it was harder.
Men did not have that luxury, society would not accept a man who did not work did not die fighting. In fact all of society is designed to make life easier for women since women control reproduction they control everything. For instance if we take Nordic culture women could be warriors if they so chose (they where reffered to as shield maidens) so long as they had not children (it would result in a child's death if she was not there to breast feed it) or she could be a wife or she could do magic (what we consider magic was in fact their religious system the divination and reading of runes (geomancy) was part of their religious system (modern fantasy is actually heavily influenced by their religion and culture). However a man could not, in fact to try and practice magic was considered ergi or unmanly and it would result in exile or some one claiming them as ergi which would force them to have to fight to the death to prove otherwise or be exiled since a man who was not masculine ie
working the fields to allow for the survival of his family and the society, who was not brave (willing to die) enough to fight to protect his family and the society was by extention viewed as worthless, he could not be used nor sacrificed and was thus cast out as a liability/dead weight. This is very much true in for instance rome/Greece in the form of vestile virgins and the oracles (particularly of Delphi) which where entirel female. The only way one can claim women where mistreated is if you just ignore all their priviledges and ignore all of mens responsibilities. Also the Spartans actually looked down upon homosexuality, others like those in rome did not but the Spartans where very much against it. You also have to realize rome the city and rome the empire are two different things, same goes with roman elite (which history talks about because they where the ones doing the writing) and the roman plebians again where two different things. The elite could do what they willed because
They had money and power. The rest did not and the harsher the conditions the stricter the rules. And again as pointed out you claimed women where looked down on yet used hypatia as an example who was highly respected for her intellect (you could have also used Sappho who was a poet in those times as well) so that kind of just proves my point women where not looked down on as part of the culture. As for your quote, context is everything. Rome was in similar situation as we are now that is women having extreme freedoms and no responsibilities. This put a disproportionate amount of responsibility on men with no priviledge to compensate for it. This created a lot of issues in that society (part of the reason for its collapse as societal cohesion fell apart). Also one person saying that means absolutely nothing. How about Athens named after the goddess of war and wisdom Athena? Or the goddess Metis who was the goddess of wisdom? Or the Muses which inspired all things
all of which where women (inspiration for art and wisdom and knowledge). Or Helen of troy so beautiful that men waged wars over her, or Alala the emodyment of the warcry (female) or Nike the goddess of victory. See a trend? Their was great respect towards women if we choose to cherry pick however then that is something conviently swepped under the rug. (also speaking of Spartans the wife or mother of a Spartan would hand him his shield and tell him "return with this or on it", meaning it was better for him to die then lose that shield. In fact their where accounts of Spartan mothers killing their own sons who where deemed cowards (because they didn't want to die simply because some one else told them to).
So women where allowed to think for themselves and did, as you actually pointed out unintentionally. As for men of course their are no more men like this because women won't allow it. feminism has stamped out masculinity where everything a man does is evil and wrong and they are trained from childhood to hate themselves and masculinity. When we have ideological groups controlling our schools and actually having programs designed to indoctrinate male children into this misandrist cult that's going to happen. When a boy acts like a boy and gets expelled for it (nine year old child was expelled for threatening some one with a pop tart (he made it look like a laser gun)) this is going to happen. Women don't want masculine men, in fact thanks to feminism the only thing women and society want from men is their physical labor. That's all men are good for in this day and age and that's why you don't see these traits, that and feminism has torn men from their children which doesn't help.
Feminist advocated for the removal of the father from the home and that has created a screwed up society. male children particularly suffer because they have no male role models (since even schools are dominated by women). So if you have issues with this blame feminism and its propaganda.
@hellionthesage ok I learned something new but I still do not think that Spartans looked down upon homosexuality because it was really based off of the fact that some of the warriors lovers were behind - I could be wrong and you just as much could be wrong but I know for a fact Sparta was very much for homosexuality. And when I mention Rome - I am always referring to ancient Rome and the wonderful elite and the rich because they were the ones who believed in having higher pleasures of men. And obviously men worked the fields and fought all wars - it was one of those things where you had to prove that you were a man.
You know, now that I think about it, why was it that women were considered to be as nothing in ancient times? I seriously believe it all started mid 1800s or somewhere in 1900s. For instance, America the great was the one that really didn't allow for women to vote or to be anything great and I am not even going to mention other countries in its existence today who still
@hellionthesage do treat women as crap but its just so funny. I come from a country where a woman did rule a whole empire if you can call it that and we almost never had problems to vote or do anything else. Yet, here in the US, (no idea where you are from) women do not have the same pay or whatever. I sometimes think it is all just a bunch of bull. I took a feminist class so believe me when I say feminists are psychotic - if I get paid 80 to 100K a year and if my husband in the same field and the same company as me will be making 200k a year, I seriously would not care. You as a person do not need so much money, you just need the essentials in life and that is it. I would love to live comfortably - if I want those shoes, I will get them obviously, I am not a psycho yet, I do not want heels for $500 but just to live comfortably and yet, what is it with these feminists? Or I cannot put makeup on because it makes me look fake or I am doing it for a guy - no I am not doing it for a guy,
@hellionthesage no I am doing this for myself. Or when I mentioned in that stupid class that I am getting laser hair removal - oh you are doing it for a guy, right away, its this constant bullshit where you are judged. If I am getting my hair removed painfully - its because I am lazy to shave every day, so I am removing it permanently and not doing it for a guy. Anyway, you did not need to know all that but I get where your frustration is coming from. It is this constant pressure from feminists thats drilled into men that, that they cannot tell a woman no or she can do the same job and no I cannot. I do not want to run into a burning building with tons of weight on me that I cannot carry. Feminism took the beauty of a woman and turned it into crap and feminism took the masculinity of a man and turned it into femininity. you are right, boys do get suspended for pretending pop tarts are laser guns. By the way, you have a brain, its nice to meet someone like that!
Not really some sources claim they participated in it but most do not. This is likely due to the fact that male children where taken from the home at age 9 to train for combat and soldiers (almost every male) didn't leave active service until 30 and well this could result in unintentional incest (being away for long durations of time right before maturity) and due to emotional investment of that level potentially weakening the unit (as they where heavily reliant on the phalanx which if one person broke rank for any reason would completely fall apart ie to defend a lover or mourn a lover). Also Spartan women where educated at least as well as the men and where very influential in society. So they where not mistreated (but the boys who where starved to train them to survive and beaten to make them strong where). Women where always cared for and always protected, always. Men however where always the ones slaving away and fighting and dying for women. Always.
You claim women could not vote yet ignore several crucial details (as you where taught an ideology that only benefits when you believe that women where mistreated) like that men couldn't vote either. In fact the only people who could vote where the rich (that's rich men and rich women). Men had to fight and die, put out fires and rescue people and form posses and restrain criminals against their will or be arrested (something women never had to do) and they didn't even get a say in who was the one telling them to do this. This actually resulted in the dhorr rebellion in rhoad island (if memory serves) where men rose up against the rich who where voting for laws that only benefited them (it failed). Men then finally got the right to vote in 1852, that's 67 years (less then one generation) before women and that was solely based upon the fact that they could be conscripted against their will into what ever service the government saw fit. Meanwhile women very much did not want to vote
in fact 70% of women surveyed in England (which by the way did not have universal male suffrage until after WWI) stated they did not wish to have the right to vote because they specificly did not wish to be conscripted into the military and forced to fight and more likely then not die ins some foreign land. Women where against female suffrage simply because men had to pay for the right to vote and women did not think it was a good deal (It wasn't but since men were forced into service anyway them getting to vote was better then what they had had before (ie for the entirety of history). So women finally got the right to vote, those women who where mistreated so what happened did they have to sign up for selective services? No. In fact to this day they do not but men do so men have to sign away their life to have the right to vote while women have had to give nothing to get it. Who is priviledged and who is not in that scenario? We pay women do not. Seems fairly obvious to me.
Same goes with coveture where women where expected to "hand over their land to their husbands and obey his authority" you know because by law he was legally responsible for her well being so he had to pay the taxes on her land he had to maintain it and therefore it was deemed unfair and illogical to let her have absolute control over it but have all responsibility fall to him. It also resulted in men going to prison for their wives debt because again he was responsible for her. Conviently left out in class rooms ( and by the feminist who push this bias view of history). Here in America their is a pay gap, but its only in a select few fields. Like modeling where the highest paid female model made about 43 million dollars and the highest paid male model made about 1 million. seems fair doesn't it? or in STEM fields where women get higher starting pay because of highering quotas (if they don't higher enough women they get fined and since few women enter these fields they are forced
to bribe (essentially) women into joining their company making womens pay higher then mens (they also get over two thirds of the teaching jobs for "reasons"(probably because women are mistreated)). Then of course you have social work where women (who make up over 80% of all social workers (because women are so mistreated that while we have hiring quotas for them we have none for men so male dominated fields have to be balanced but female dominated fields like social work psychology human resource management, teaching can legally be entirely female (which is apparently not sexist but it is if their is a job that has more men in it, go figure) get paid over a dollar more (considerably greater then the 33 cent claim (which has been disproven more times then I can count) but that's not sexist except towards women, some how. www.bing.com/.../search
In fact not only is the pay gap a myth it also would have a really hard time explaining why men earn more work more yet 80% of US domestic spending is done by women (if they earn so little how can they spend so much? Its 70% world wide). Then of course not only do women have an advantage with pay (and spending) and with hiring quotas that men do not have but they also have so many more priviledges. The fact that women only get a third of the sentencing a man does for commiting the same crime and this is only when they are even sentenced at all (frequently its commuted to a lighter charge or ignored all together) then you have laws and legal rulings that allow women to do horrendous crimes against men and not only get away with it but benefit from it like hermesmann v. seyer where a thirty year old women was able to successfully argue that she (and women in general) should be able to sue the father of a child irregardless of how it was conceived for child support.
The reason why this is absurd is because the woman raped a twelve year old boy. She raped a boy then sued and won the case forcing him to pay child support to his rapist. This case has been held up in Arizona where a 14 year old was raped by a woman and in florida recently where a mans sperm was stolen from a sperm bank (he had it frozen before getting a vasectomy incase he changed his mind on having kids) without his consent (hence it being stolen) by his ex girlfriend who impregnated herself with it and successfully sued him for child support as well as many other cases similar to those. A ten year old boy was raped by his teacher in texas, she was told not to do it again and the schools punishment was to make her teach with the door open. Does any of that sound like the man is priviledged and the woman mistreated? Was it men who had no legal ramifications for their actions? Was it men who raped and got away with it? No, it was women. Then of course you have domestic violence laws
like the violence against women act which pretty much states that the only violence we care about is the violence commited against women (because apparently women are mistreated) and that it is always perpetrated by men, ironic considering that multiple studies (some done by the CDC and the NCVS) have shown that 70% of all non reciprocal violence between intimate partners is perpetrated by women against men, that 50% of all reciprocal violence between intimate partners is perpetaretd by women ie women are significantly more likely to commit domestic violence (as well as be abusive towards children) then men are yet the law states otherwise, our media states otherwise, our society states otherwise and people still claim women are the ones treated unfairly? The CDC also found that men are raped by women at almost the same rates as women raped by men yet this is not acknowledged at all is it?
Rape against men didn't even become illegal until 2013(and to be honest its still legal because no one acknowledges female on male rape). Then of course we have our educational system which has been so feminized that males are being punished for being male. their is a 4x greater drop out rate for males in every single grade in school and 63% of all college graduates are female and the number is rising yet when those numbers where reversed it was considered sexism (despite the fact those same women had families and lived good lives) yet when its happening to men its men being "lazy"(despite the fact that this is harming their ability to make a living (and our economy overall) have families etc all resulting in far worse situations for them then it did the women who where "oppressed"). Then of course males make up 75% of all suicide victims, 80% of the homeless (despite women claiming poverty is a "womans issue"), 98% of all work place accidents and deaths are male,
or taking into account the fact that the top three cancers in order of commonality and likely hood of death are 1. lung cancer 2. prostate cancer 3. breast cancer. The strange part about this is we never talk about prostate cancer that affects more men and kills more men then breast cancer does women (women have a 33% chance of getting and dying of cancer in general vs a mans 50%) yet it receives 2.5x the funding from both private sector and public sector (ie government) spending. This holds true for all diseases making female centric diseases researched and funded at a rate 3x greater then male ones despite the fact that male disease are more common and affect men at younger ages. There are plenty of others I am probably forgetting but this I think is enough to point out that no, women are not mistreated and are in fact treated better then any other group while men, men are at the bottom of the list of things society gives a damn about.
So that is my frustration. The obfuscation of the truth the claim that the most cared for the best off the longest lived and most taken care of people are "oppressed" by the most ignored, most used and abused people. Its the lies and hypocrisy. Truth is what matters to me, I could not care less if women hate men or feminist want to rule over men or what have you what I do care about is them lying, I care about them hiding the truth (an impossible task as the truth always comes to light, always) that's what gets me frustrated, that and the fact it is so painfully obvious with just the simplest glance at how society functiones and what men do for women compared to what women do for men ( i. e. nothing). As for feminitity, if women wish to destroy it that's on them I think its stupid, that they would claim women as being so great and destroy everything that makes a woman a woman but that is not my place. Her choice just have the guts to own it. Personaly I preffer feminine women but again
If women wish to destroy themselves their is little I can do to stop them. Just don't try and play victim when your clearly the only one who isn't (you as in general/feminist/women not you specificly just to clarify).
You actually believe in that stupidity known as "Feminism", WOW, if you want feminism to win then travel back to time and kill the first man otherwise biologically you can't win sorry. Woman can gain some of those traits by hard work but you will never be able to even stand against man putting same hard work in it. Simply genetically modified and superiority will always have edge.
I have all of these qualities if you look at my page I preach this stuff all day yet I can't get a girl. Make a thing about how to attract highschool girls and I'll listen
You got to find that delicate balance in high school of confidence, sensitivity, charm, and sex appeal. It's got to be perfect or they will think you are either a joke/jerk or just friend material.
Highschool is mostly shallow, So it's all about popularity and looks. But, It's not always like it seems. Plus, HS is full of raging harmones, So they are horny. Of course, There are the girls that are wise way beyond their years. The best advice is women will go for you if they want to, So make sure they want to lol
95% of these differences are culturally induced. They aren't fundamental differences between men and women, and with advancing gender equality, most of them will disappear, and that's for the best.
I don't really believe in stereotypes - If you feel happy, comfortable with your masculinity etc that is cool with me - I myself am just happy doing my own thing, I haven't a clue what box I tick and frankly I am not pushed what box I tick.

I don't know, is it wrong for a girl to not really like beards? I kind of prefer clean shaven, and if people complain that I'm high maintenance (which is untrue because that is one of the only things I look for physically) then I say if we as women have to shave our under arms in order to be acceptable in this society, then how come I cannot prefer a clean shaven face?

ridiculous mytake. and that list is so stupid. i mean u can't take all the good characteristics urself ! this is y i dont care wht men think about me, because they say that any positive quality which i have is "supposed to be masculine". ( and it feels so restricting. ) BS !
that is ridiculous, women always were vigilant to take care of the kids, have to change because of their husbands, keep their problems private, clean the house to make it perfect. why is this masculine?
Apprehension and warmth and all that shit? Yeah that got thrown out the window. I feel like I'm too 'in your face' in real life to be considered classically feminine, in terms of behaviour at least.
