You Don't Need to Man-Up!

As a culture we really need to do away with the phrase man-up. This phrase is hurting everyone most notably men and boys. I am not saying you have to cry at every single perceived slight but you can cry when your dog dies, you can cry when your kid is born or they go off to school. Emotions are your friends. They help us deal with situations and learn how to get through them. Humans at our core are social animals we were designed by nature to seek comfort in each other. Let those that love you see you at your weakest, see you at your most vulnerable. No one can be rock solid 100 percent of the time and if you say you are your a liar. No ones buying it, and that's probably one of the most cowardly things you could do.

You Don't Need to Man-Up!

So fathers please stop telling your sons to toughen-up to man-up. If your four year old falls down and scrapes his knees. Hug him tell him it's okay. Teach him to regulate rather then to suppress. Teach him that there are times when it's okay to cry and there are times when he needs to cry. We live in a world where men are SIGNIFICANTLY more likely than women to die via suicide.

Teach your sons that it is okay to reach out for help, teach him that their is strength in vulnerability and most importantly teach him that he can lean on you. Show your children your vulnerability teach them that Daddy is not a superhero and sometimes needs help too. Let them see you lean on other people. Let them see that it is okay not to be perfect. It may just save their life one day.
